Potato shortage

Apparently some countries have been hit by a global potato shortage and restaurants like KFC and MacDonalds are now offering other options instead of potato chips. Started in Japan and is now spreading westwards as Africa is next on the list? Do a Google on Potato shortage. Does this mean we must all rush out and stock up on potatoes? LOL! 😀

Better start getting the spuds in the ground this spring.

My dad used to grow and store enough 'tates' to last through the winter for all immediate family, mind you my gran did have a 'garden' as big as a field! We called it a tatey pie, or in 'technical' terms a clamp. 'The good old days'! Used to last through the winter too,

I used to have one on my allotment and veg plot at home years ago. Carrots were picked and stored in dry sand in a cold bedroom. Well all bedrooms were cold then. Parsnips, turnips and leeks were picked straight from the ground throughout winter.

All farmers used to do that, get the tatties pulled up in the Autumn and stored in clamps at the field edge and gradually sent to market until next years crop was ready - no "use by" dates in those days!

We grow our own tatties for the summer, then have to switch to the supermarket. These have been difficult to get in the last few months. No consistency of variety.

Carrots and broccoli still coming from the polytunnel and almost time to start planing again.

Our local farm shop-they grow your own-they've had such a bumper year they reduced the price from £6 a 25kg sack to £4.50 just before Christmas as they're running out of storage space-they are fantastic potatoes too-just ready for another sack!
