Prewired for a stereo.

Hi all, my 2006 Sprite Quattro has a car stereo sized blanking plate fitted in the front left corner, on the facing between the side locker and the front locker. I have discovered a wiring loom behind this which has two plugs which match up perfectly with the radio/cd I wish to fit, there are also speaker wires, on both sides of the van ready to go, I thought this was all going too smoothly, and then, there was the catch, they have supplied everthing apart from an antenna, or antenna cable.

So, do I have to fit an antenna and drill a hole through the wall for the cable, which I'm not too keen on for leak/damp reasons, or is it possible to tap into the tv flying saucer antenna, will this pick up FM, or is there another solution?

Thanks, Jim

Hi Jim,

I don't think you can tap into the flying saucer antenna because the TV frequency is much higher than FM, although someone with more knowledge may be able to advise differently.

You could try running a longish piece of trailing cable from the centre pin on the radio antenna socket, hidden behind the overhead lockers. This may well act as a good enough aerial in strong signal areas without the need to start drilling a hole in the caravan side. Both our current Ace and the one before it had an external telescopic radio aerial which pulled up manually, but in the last 5 years I have never needed to extend the aerial.

I don't think my tv aerial is an FM one, it doesn't have the spike, and appears to just have TV outlets at the box.

I'll try the trailing wire method, or see about a stick on the window aerial before I drill anything.

Thanks for all the suggestions, best regards, Jim.

Hi.I've just fitted a radio/cd player in my van.I connected the aerial lead from the radio to the fm socket on my status aerial, but i was able to pick up a very good signal when the cable was only plugged into the radio and the other end left hanging. Why not try this. You have nothing to loose.
