Problem with Nissan X-Trail - Any car buffs/mechanics out there?

Hi all,

I bought a 53 Nissan Xtrail 2.2 Diesel Sport a few months ago specifically for towing.

It was blowing black smoke out of the back when I accelerated. Something was replaced to put gas back into the exhaust which made no difference. Then the fuel injectors were replaced which helped but it still did it sometimes and still the same whilst towing.

I took it back again and they put a new cat in it which made no difference. It's now been to a fuel injector place who say it's a "characteristic of the vehicle".

Does anyone know if this could be the case or am I being fobbed off?

Thanks

Steve in Colchester

I would suggest they changed your EGR valve, which makes sense as this puts exhaust gas back into the inlet to clean up emmision.

Hopefully they did check it was working proper and was not sufering from a bad electrical connector if modern enough.

Black smoke could also be down to a hole or split in a air supply pipe to or from the inter cooler or the turbo. this would show up as a lack of power.

If no lack of power it could also be down to the fact that the entire exhaust system is badly sooted up due to a earlier build up.i would suggest a good Bosch agent would identity this pretty quickly.. good luck

I have a 07 2.2dCi,

it doesn't smoke at all.

What is it like on oil?

Jim

Hi Steve, We got the same x- trail like you got and we did have black smoke coming out, I tried fuel cleaner no luck but keep putting it in, Then found out what the problem was each time I had the car service they over fill the oil mark, so I ask them to put the oil in just below the dip stick mark, You got L mark on the bottom and H mark on the top then in the middle of the dip stick you got XXXXX on it, just fill it to the top of theXXX mark, since then you still get a little light smoke when you drive off, the good news is now no more black soot on the rear of the car body work, Give it a try see what happen then, I am please so far, Trevor

I had 3 XT 2.2 diesels and the first one 51 reg was awful for smoking

After being fobbed off and delayed at the UK dealer we went to Inter Diesel at Figueras in Spain when on the C & CC rally at San Per Pescador and the car was nearly one year old

They kept the car for several days and replaced what they called the system anti pollution and did something with the injectors. All this was explained by sign language and showing us injectors followed by spitting sounds of different quality to show before and after the work had been done

It was a LOT better after that but never as good as the 53 reg or the last one which was a Columbia as far as smoking was concerned

The current 57 reg 2.0 litre diesel is very good for not smoking
