I think you have misunderstood.
When BT moves over to VoIP in 2025/6 (in theory) you will no longer have cables to your property, only a fibre so having a spare phone to plug in is useless.
There are literally millions of homes with no optic cable to the property, but with copper wire to the street cabinet - are all these homes going to be disenfranchised when BT switches to VOIP? I'd suggest the answer is no, they'll continue to be connected by the copper wire in the same way they get Broadband at present.

I've always thought that the Chit-chat section of this forum was like a group of friends sitting around a table over a beveridge of choice discussing what ever comes along and that the topic can vary during the session. The thing that's missing is the face to face aspect and we don't fully understand each others personality traits. So we miss out on the visual and audible queues and sometimes either make statements that might come across as a little confrontational or we misunderstand the intent.

At all times though we should try to be friendly and helpful.

The other thing is that when you get to a certain age its ok to repeat stories and jokes that you've told over and over because chances are your friends can't remember hearing them either :)

So point in question:-

A slight deviation from Contactless cards but still a tenuous connection - pun intended. We've had discussions eslewhere about Digital Voice/VoIP etc. and the fact that in the event of a power cut there is not phone service unless you keep your router alive somehow. To be fair this is not too different for a lot of people who only have cordless phones on the current wired system, except they did have the option to plug in a wired phone. While you can plug in a wired phone to the BT router it still needs the router to be powered in order operate.

But to return to Contactless. In the event of a shop etc having a power cut the card readers probably wont work and you wont have any money. Gone are the days of Arkwright who would probably charge you for a couple of candles, take your money and trap his fingers in the till while short changing you.

And there is us only having changed within the last year to copper, after 50 years or about on "aluminium"; as seems par for the course the aluminium ultimately corrodes through where clamped in a weather expoded connector.

Interestingly with just the single core our internet worked but not the phone, fortunately we had a VoIP for outgoing, but for the two weeks Openreach needed we had no incoming voice line.

We were in Morrisons when they had a power cut and initially they would not allow anyone to leave as the security sensors were not functioning. The shoppers on the other side of the tills could not leave the store as they could not pass through the tills. The automatic barriers that allowed you into the store would not function either so could not leave by that means either.
People who had fuelled up or in the process of fuelling up could not leave either. Not being able to pay for shopping by card is minor in comparison to the other hassles when you have a power cut to an area.
The whole shopping complex became chaotic as power break was for nearly an hour. Not good. Luckily for us we were just about to enter the store when all this happened.
