Propane

I've been told of a flexible pipe with a brass connection on each end, one connects to a propane gas bottle and the other connects to the LPG pump at the garage, where you can then fill your gas bottle. They are being sold at £32.

Any comments please, i.e. Are they safe, is LPG propane, How many litres of gas would be in a Kilogram?

Cheers Graham.

Graham. You shouldnt do it but be careful if you do. I put 10 ltrs in a 6 k bottle it will take more but you only pay for the gas you take.I filled 2 6 ks last week for less than

Hello Graham,

There are a number of issues that have not been fully clarified regarding portable propane containers.

Most UK garages that deliver LPG for motive power are only insured for the filling of mobile (i.e. permanently attached to vehicles) rather than portable (can be carried by hand.) bottles.

It is strictly illegal and dangerous to attempt to refill rented Calorgas Bottles, as they have to filled be weight taking into account the tare weight not volume. The same may well apply to other suppliers bottles e.g. shellgas, protogas etc)

Some bottles sourced from Europe do have indicators that show when they are full, but several I have seen were less than effective.

I had the intention of buying a proper Gaslow refillable bottle with the stop valve to prevent over filling. The only way i could fill it was when it would be fixed in the caravan or car.I have never found a place where i can fill a stand alone cylinder even a lpg pump on an industrial unit said no.
