Quick help needed - a daft mistake

Hi

I have a stupid mistake but I dont know what to do now.

When I was parking my caravan at home, I unhitched everything but forgot the breakaway cable. As I drove off it snapped off.

Obviously I need this fixing but will I be ok to tow locally to get it fixed, or will hte brakes be locked on now?

I am going away this weekend so I could do with some quick help.

Phil,

Easy - the brake-away cable is just attached to the bottom of the handbrake, so simply release the handbrake and the brakes will be released.

But you will need to replace the brake-away cable (caravan shop) before you can tow the caravan again - and no - you can't tow without a brake-away cable.

Changing the cable is an easy DIY job.

Thanks for the quick reply. Do I have replace the full cable or just where it joined under the A-frame?

I dont really facy doing it all as it obviously linkes to rear brakes and will need correctly tensioning?

Just the front bit, they are designed to come off after the brakes have been applied. As said it's an easy diy job .

Phil,

If you look under the caravan handbrake, you'll see that the plastic covered cable is attached to a continuation of the handbrake lever.

All you need to replace is the (usually) red plastic covered cable - the joint with the handbrake is re-made either with a couple of clamps or a ring clip. You will need to cut the old cable to remove it.

Forgot to say that the function of the brakeaway cable is to pull on the handbrake and apply the brakes. The brakeaway cable doesn't have anything to do with how the brakes function - and you don't need to adjust the brakes.

Imagine that you were forgetful and need a reminder to apply the car handbrake each time you got out of your car. One solution would be a length of string attached to your belt and the car handbrake - then when you got out of the car it would tug on the handbrake lever - and if you walked too far the string would break, but you wouldn't expect to service the brakes. That's how the brakeaway cable works
