Rabbits and squirrels on the Continent

Today whilst walking I saw the usual rabbits and squirrels and then thought, that is something I had not seen on a recent trip around Europe, in fact I could not recall seeing a single rabbit or squirrel (red or grey). Am I just unobservant or are there none to be seen?
 
I keep a caravan on site in Beaune and see plenty of red sqirrels, also see them between Carcassonne and Perpignan.

I hope I never see grey sqirrels in these areas as they are a death sentence to the reds.
