Andy, I've no personal experience of the TD6, but I know a couple of people who have them and they are very disappointed with the performance.Economy isn't good either. Check any of the Land Rover forums; they all tell the same story. You'd be better off buying a late model classic, or a V8 p38, (making sure that the engine doesn't have a cooling problem - mega expensive to put right),and convert to LPG.

We considered the RR P38 diesel but found it extreemely under powered, we then looked at the TD6 which was a nice machine but felt that it was over priced. In the end we settled for a 3.0CRD Grand Cherokee which has more than enough power and slightly more economical to run. Saying that the next tow car will have to be the RR V8 4.2 diesel.

Del, the p38 diesel was the TD6. The later one was TDV^. I have run an old classic 4.2 Lse for years now. Absolutely first class machine.

Del,

The MB E420 CDI V8 is a real honey, and it's in some other MB vehicles - with 315 bhp and 538 lb/ft torque - and it most probably will find it's way into the Grand Cherokee...

The 3.0 litre isnt underpowered look at the technical specifications on the Land rover web site, With the launch of the V84.2 the used prices for the 3.0 are dropping.

Andy, the rr is an absolute gem and a wonderfull car to drive but ive got to ask you Why you would possibly want one in this day with the rising cost of fuel and the rising resentment from the general public towards these cars ?.

your van weighs less than 1500 kgs mtplm most estate cars and allmost every mpv is capable of towing such a light van and most will do 3 times the miles per gallon that the rr will be capable of.

As for lpg conversions, the cost of lpg has just risen to 52 pence per litre round here which is still half the price of diesel but if the rr does around 18 mpg on lpg then it is still a 3rd more expensive to run than most other cars that can tow your van.

On top of this the values of large 4x4's are now starting to drop at startling rates, a used 4x4 specialist near me has recently dropped

Take it to JE Engineering who do a great tune for the TD6, which makes the car a lot more pleasant. If you've got the money the TDV8 3.6 is a real peach of an engine.

Ive never driven a merc of any description andy as i just dont like them, having said this the car really should not have been struggling with your van and 4 bikes on the roof.

last year i went to france towing an ace celebration twin axle which was 140 kgs heavier than your van, i towed it with my seat alhambra 1.9 tdi 130 bhp manual, we allso had a roof bar system on but had a roof box and a double canoe rather than bikes, we had two adults two fully grown teenagers and two dogs on board plus everything required by all the occupants for a 2 week stay and we had absolutely no problems what so ever with the car, it towed superbly with excellent fuel economy and at one point whilst following a german outfit we did nearly 100 miles at an average of 75 mph.

I cant see why you would think buying a large 4x4 will give you any better advantage over any normal 2 wheel drive vehicle that has a good power to weight ratio for your outfit, indeed in my eyes the oposite would be true as the 4x4 would weigh conciderably more to start with so would need more power just to move itself.

Obviousley everybody has there own reasons for buying a particular vehicle and you need to make your own mind up,ive had large 4x4's for towing and after going the mpv route i would never touch a large 4x4 again, theres many ways to get out of a muddy field and running round in such a car is not justified to me for the very few times ive been stuck.
