Rav 4 kerb weight

Can anybody help. We have a 2000(W Reg) 3-door Rav 4 and need to know what the kerbweight is to calculate whether it is suitable to tow our Abbey Vogue 216 (MIRO 1105, MTPLM 1308).

The log book gives the gross vehicle weight (1640), the trainweight (3140) and the maximum tow weight (1500). Is there any way that we can calculate the kerb weight from these?

Alternatively, does anyone know what the kerbweight is because we suspect it is too light for safe towing of the Abbey Vogue?

No you can't derive the kerbweight from the information that you have given.

You don't say what engine your Rav4 has got, nor if it is manual or automatic, so one can give only a very approximate figure for the kerbweight. It'll be somewhere between 1200 and 1400kg, depending on the specification.

Hello Brian,

Based on the figures you have provided, the Rav 4 with a maximum tow weight of 1500Kg, is more than capable of towing your Abbey Vogue 216 with MTPLM 1308Kg. Even with both car and caravan fully loaded you are still within the gross train weight allowance of 3140Kg.

The only possible legal restriction you may have is if you passed your driving test after Jan 97 - you may be limited to a trailer that does not exceed 100%of the kerbweight of the tow vehicle. However, without the kerb weight you cannot calculate the towing ratio. Which is based on:-

fully laden weight of trailer : kerbweight of car

The often quoted 85% ratio, is only a guideline, is not a legal requirement, and in no way guarantees a satisfactory outfit match.

'Safe towing', is not simply related to weight ratios, but also down to the way the vehicles are loaded, and of course driving habits.

For definitive information on kerbweight, ask your vehicle dealer or manufacture.

in 1996 the 3dr Rav 4 manual kerb weight is 1150 and auto is 1180Kg, which I don't think had changed by 2000.
