Rear end shunt

Just sitting at a roundabout this afternoon in my Freelander waiting for a gap when a young lad decided to give me a helping hand. Got out to inspect the damage to find he was firmly impaled on my towbar. The spare wheel had dented his bonnet. With the help of some other drivers we managed to bump his car off. He had broken his radiator fan and there also looked like a crack in his radiator. Not a mark on the Freelander at all! As we were close to the trailer centre who fitted the towbar we popped in so that he could check it out. Fortunately we got the all clear. All this on my birthday as well!!

3 weeks ago a lady went into the back of me at about 5 mph.

Not a mark on her car but she damaged my towbar and bumper.

Ford put on a brand new towbar and rear bumper.

Cost?..approx

The same thing happened to me quite a while back.

A young lad ran into the back of my Pajero while I was in a line of traffic. There was damage to the front of his car and his radiator but my car suffered no damage (I had it checked) because he'd hit my towball.

It turns out that he'd been texting on his mobile phone.

So there is more than one good reason for a tow bar to be fitted.

Glad your freelander was ok.

Yesterday our car was parked in Leominster and a traffic warden walked into my tow ball. I couldn't resist asking if it hurt. As the warden was explainig his pains, I couldn't help saying, "I didn't feel a thing".

Oh sweet revenge.

It happened to us, too, when someone was obviously over-enthusiastic in parking behind us and impaled the car on our towball. The silly so and so obviously hadn't noticed, and had got out and left his car, so we had to wait for him to come back to remove it.

Incidentally, we read (whilst in France) that in France if you have a removeable tow-ball, and have a rear end shunt when not towing, but still have the tow-ball attached, that your insurance may not cover you! How long before our insurers (many French companies, now) have the same idea?

My wife had a similar experience with her Saab 9000 and although there appeared to be no damge when you got underneath the rear floor pan was rippled and the repairs were quite pricey.

In Italy it is illegal not to remove a detachable towball when not towing.
