I swapped from RAC to Green Flag Mayday at the start of this year, for the reasons outlined by Mr Grumpy in #4. I've never had to use the service so can't comment on that, but I can say that since we swapped the antique Jeep for Mrs Gozza's new Citroen, GF-M made it quite difficult to swap cars on the policy. They present you with an online form which looks easy enough, but submitting the form just brings an email with a phone number to ring - which you have to try a number of times if you're not happy to be number 89 in the queue.

However, that's a once-every-three-years thing, compared to the peace of mind that comes from knowing you've got specialist caravan recovery if you need it...
We opted for the "Personal Cover" so no need to change car details!

As I expected a mixed bag of view points, so as usual its down to me to make up my mind :)

Our bank includes Recovery, Mobile Phone insurance and Travel Insurance. However the Mobile Phone Insurance isn't much of a benefit and the Travel Insurance is no longer free when you go over 70 or you need more than 31 days away, which we often do.

So, the extra we're paying for this is now questionable, especially as its really only the Recovery that has any real benefit.
To us it is the onward travel that is important. Out car broke down while out and about and it was recovered back to campsite, car & caravan were collected two days later and caravan taken to storage compound and car back to residence as it was a Sunday. On Monday car taken to franchised dealership 25 miles away. Will a bank recovery plan do the same or similar?

I do not know what bank you are with but my daughter had one of the accounts with the add ons and the breakdown cover was very restrictive. I would check the cover carefully to make sure it will work for you.

I always carefully check any T&C's and it was a good cover, including the caravan. But the extra cost of the account these days is more than the benefits if bought separately elsewhere.

It's a bit like the dilemma with Insurance. You hope you'll never need it. With recovery insurance the probability is that I won't be towing if I needed a call out but better if the caravan is covered just in case.

This has got me thinking about my own vulnerability as we're off to Winchester later in the week. As I get my Mitsubishi anually serviced at my local main dealership I automatically get roadside assistance but wondered if it would cover a caravan puncture even if my vehicle was OK. I called them and apparantly it does butI don't really want to test the system and would have a go at changing the wheel if the circumstances were in my favour.

Been with Green flag for over 10 years, called them out twice, Arriving at destination in the winter had an noise underneath but as it was clogged up with slosh could see nothing. Green Flag came and cleared the fault but felt sorry for him in the state he was in. Few years later caravan wheel went down a pothole making contact with the power driver , locking the wheel in doing so . We were in a country lane and seemed miles from habitation. Again called them but it required a lot of questions where we where. Eventually he came and had to use crowbar to take wheel off plus power driver bit of a mess but we were able to carry on couple of hour's later. So will stay with them.

Did you really expect to get a definitive answer? ;)
Sadly not!
Yet out of 33 posts six Forumites ,who still tow, all recommend CAMC Mayday via Greenflag. All said the extra peace of mind knowing the caravan is fully covered plus the dual recovery and a few other add ons made it a no brainer. You may argue some of the comments were biased but did not include towing! Weird!
I have to say Sam, bearing in mind where you live and the distances involved , peace of mind would be my first criterion. In essence and with no disrespect the financial difference between the ordinary and the best is barely a tankful of diesel😁
