Hi Chelsea, I tow a Senator Vermont with a Honda CRV 2.2ctdiEx. After a series of petrol versions and an early diesel powered CRVs the latest one is a dream and perfectly matched to the van. My experience with Honda is one of complete satisfaction. With 2 adults and all the holiday gear I regularly get 27-29 mpg towing and 43 -45 mpg solo. And there is 100kg noseweight which is great.

Hi Ian

Correct me if I'm wrong but the CRV diesel kerbweight is 1660kgs, as specified in Honda's brochure, assuming you have a diesel, and if your towing 1680kgs that would make it over 100% match which isn't particulary safe!

Or is the brochure wrong?

Mike
Honda CRV all the way.

We have { as yet} had no problems . It's a 2009 2.2ctdi and pulls our Swift Charisma 565 like a dream. We didn't even test drive this car, just did the homework beforehand. This car can pull two tons, it has a massive boot which we liked, thought the Freelandr was a bit small in that department.

Any other questions feel free to ask. When pulling the caravan we get about 29mpg which my husband is trying to better everytime!

If reliability is the key concern then I would look at:

Nissan Xtrail (petrol - the diesel is less reliable)

Honda CR-V (diesel or petrol)

Toyota landcruiser (diesel - the petrol is too expensive to run)

Kia Sorento

I notice that you had the VW Toureg on your initial list - I discounted this when I started looking at their reliability

Ha ha, I see the troll is at it again. Now maquerading as Gilbert. Nobody even mentined a Bentley? unless a mod deleted it.

If he actually had a 'Eldiss Odessey' (sic) I am sure he would know how to spell it.

When there are so many good choices out there and you consider the potential of a problem within the 4th, 5th, 6th or 7th year, surely the Kia Sportage is untouchable.

I wonder how many of your problems you have experienced recently would have been covered by a 7 year warranty as offered by Kia or would they have classed them as wear and tear?

My vote is with you, Keith Shogun every time, had 3 last one for ten years just changed this July to a 07 SWB Auto, we have only ever had the Short wheel base has their are only two of us and to yorkies, find the Auto brilliant for towing Motorways 24mpg A roads 21MPG.

Hope it is has reliable has the last one only fault in ten years broken fuel pipe after 104,000 miles.

Some say they guzzle fuel but all mine have towed around 21 to 24 MPG which l think is about right for large 4X4, obviously the tonker toys will do better.

Chelsea it boils down to personal choice and what you find best, to us the Shogun has always done the stuff so why change

Chelsea,

I have a 2.5 year old Freelander 2 and apart from the fact that it tows like a dream (as a lot do) I have had far too many warranty issues and encountered a total lack of interest from LR when contacted direct having given up on their dealer.

So my advice would be to definitely avoid LR.

My 15 year old Range Rover V8 has done 163,000 miles, the last 63,000 in my tenancy. It has let me down once, when the air suspension failed. it tows my 30 year old Royale all over Europe in superb comfort, but only manages around 12mpg. However, as it runs on LPG, that equates to around 24mpg in money. This is my umpteenth Classic RR, and I have no plans to replace it, or the caravan.

You want reliability? Buy an old RR. Some else has already had the problems!

Only a dumpling would go out and buy another freeloader after all the stated failures.

So lr fans stop attempting to defend the make, it's pointless.

I am on my second xtrail, the latest version with the renault engine i have covered 5k completely trouble free miles in, i would advise you to test drive both the crv, and the xtrail, i did and bought another xtrail, with it i get a larger boot, a more powerful engine (171bhp, 266lbft torque) and 40 plus mpg, around 30 mpg towing 1333kg.

All makes have problems, some more than others!
