Hello,
We are travelling to Caen from Dol-de-Bretange, Brittany on Friday to catch the over night crossing to Portsmouth and would like to leave in afternoon and stop close to the port for an evening meal and to waste any spare time we have.
We have 3 kids under 6 years of age and no animals.
Any recommendations appreciated, Thanks.

We usually catch the early morning boat but stay overnight on the quayside. You can check in early and immediately after the check in booths, if you pull right over to the left against the security fence, there is lots of space to park. From there you can walk back into the town and find a nice restaurant, shop etc. There is no reason why you couldn't check in late afternoon and do the same thing.

I seem to remember there being a cafe at the port but cannot comment on its quality.

There is a cafe in the port but it's a burgers and chips establishment. Far better to walk 5 minutes back into town and take your pick of good restaurants.
