When adapting a short lead (male one end , female the other) in case I encounter reverse polarity on the continent, do I swap the live and neutral wires at one end only or both ends ?

One end only, if you reverse both ends you will only have reversed the colours not the polarity.

What I meant was one end only eg plug end or either end. In other words, does it matter which end. Anyway, you've answered my question so thanks for that. g.
