Road restrictions

Hello all, Hope you all had a nice festive time?

Anyway, for those jumping on their machines, my hubby says he saw an artical in a paper (don't know which one) about road restrictions for vans.

I am starting to plan our holiday in June to Austria, which mran driving through Germany. He says the artical said that caravans are restricted to 50 miles an hour on the motorways. Can anyone clarify this because I would have allow for extra driving time for getting through Germany??

Many thanks

The speed limit in most countries on the Continent, including Germany, is 80km/h (50mph). Belgium (120km/h) and France (130km/h) are the main exceptions.

There was an article in the CC mag, i believe or this sites mag concerning being able to raise you speed limit whilst towing in germany to 100 kph [62 mph]

It involves your car having abs [i believe] % weight of tow vehicle V caravan ect ect. and you need to get tuv check out first!

Which means finding a tuv station whilst in germany paying over your money and being delayed by a fair few hours.

I soppose its ok if you go through germany often though.

The diference between 50mph and 60mph is hardly noticeable driving through Germany. What you will notice is the improved fuel economy. We tend to drive at 55 to 60 on open sections , but remember that there are long sections where you are not allowed overtake if towing.

I fully agree, Graham. On motorways, speed traps are only to be found where speed limits are signposted. I've never heard of anyone caught towing too fast on derestricted sections, although I wouldn't push my luck too far.
