Rotten floor

Hi, I have a 1991 Bucaneer Caravel and I have just had a new carpet fitted. The wooden flooring near the door is rotten and soft to about 5/6 inches from the door. I found no ingress of water after the last heavy rain we had. The carpet fitter has left a doormat sized bit of floor bare near the door and said he will fit some kind of mat when the floor is sorted.

I have no idea how to resolve this issue. Please help.

Oh dear, you may have done things in the wrong order.

It's usual to fix the floor, which involves lifting the old carpet, before fitting a new carpet.

gary your dampness could have been caused by wet shoes being left just inside the door or maybe previous owners had a habit of leaving the door open in the rain.if its a small area it should only be a case of cutting out the sodden top ply and bonding on a new piece.if its only an area 6x12or so there will probably be no damp in the floor structure.

Hi Gary

Suggest you check the floor througout the 'van - any kind of springyness or spongyness note it - it will have to be fixed.

Roger is correct - if the above is their then the carpet must come up again and you need to treat the floor.

Do a search both here and via google on delamination. Easy to fix and relatively cheap if you can do it yourself. You can download a step by step instruction on how ton do the repair.

However - the rotten floor is something else. This area should be totaly removed right back to sound floor and replaced with a replacement piece bonded in place.

The problem IS NOT Terminal - I can easily be fixed - have a look at a Haynes manual or similar.

Thanks for your replies folks. There is no damage or damp anywhere else in the van. Are there any instructions online for replacing the small section of floor?

Gary
