If you are concerned about steep hills, why not consider the North Wales coast road?

From the Warwick area, head towards Shrewsbury, then up the A5 towards Chester, then along the A55 coast road - mainly dual carriageway - and gentle slopes. When you get close to Bangor, head towards Caernarfon and across the Lleyn Peninsula to Criccieth.

This will add about 30 miles to the journey compared to the A470 route (15 miles north then the same distance south at the end).
