Hello Andrew. We may see you there! My daughter went this year with her three and caravan. Says its fabulous:free shows, disco, bingo etc.and almost on beach. She booked for next year whilst she was there and also booked us in for next pitch to them. We will need a holiday after that to recover.Fairly expensive though(makes CC sites look really cheap!!)

I haven't stayed on the site, but I used their pool and had a look around. It is highly commercialised and very busy in high season. If you want peace and quiet, it is not the place for you. But if you want bustle, club, activities for the children etc and you don't mind the price, then it will be ideal.

While you are staying at Croyde take a trip round to Putsborough if you want the best beach in the area I used to use the caravan park ther for over 30 years but it got too expensive for me good luck and have a good holiday also a PS if you want the best fish and chips go to Squires on the main drag in Broughton

Andrew - we live in Barnstaple and visit colleagues who stay at Ruda most Whitsun holidays. As others have said VERY busy and commercialised, but literally yards from Croyde beach, good sized pitches. The Thatch in Croyde is an excellent family and dog friendly pub, with plenty of outside seating and great food - their Sunday roasts are tremendous. If any of you want an easier route to Croyde which avoids the long queues through Barnstaple, let me know. They are building a new bridge, but it won't be open until 2007. Have a good hols!

Mike, is there an quick way through Banstaple from the A361 to Ilfacombe, without using the A399 through Combe Martin.

I went through Barnstaple a few times this year and it seemed to be permanently grid locked and I will be going again next year so any directions would be appreciated, bearing in mind I will have the van in tow.

Big Roy & anybody else going to Croyde/Woolacombe/N Devon coasts - avoid the main drag through Barnstaple - you'll be held up for at least an hour during peak holiday times - so here's a local's back doubles, perfectly navigable with a van in tow:-

Stay on the A361 to Barnstaple, about 2 miles before you enter the town at the roundabout by Tesco's, turn left signposted to Landkey, then 2nd right to Newport. Keep on this road for about 3 miles, going straight over the T/Lights, then left past the Vauxhall garage at the T junction.

Continue onto the Square, bearing left over the bridge, then doing a U turn at the roundabout and proceeding back down the bridge (daft one way system!), then left into The Strand, past the Civic Centre and Police Station and left at the next mini roundabout onto the A361 Braunton road.

You will still hit a bit of traffic, but you won't be held up for long.

Once you've unhitched the van and parked it up, there are a number of short cuts possible as a solo car avoiding the log jam in Braunton T Centre:-

From Barnstaple, upon entering the 30mph limit in Braunton, turn left into Velator Way, follow this road to the end after about 3-4 miles of narrow twisty lanes, turning right at the T junction, then left at the next T just before the Saunton Sands hotel, Croyde is then only a mile or so. This will avoid the long delays in Braunton, but is not suitable when towing.

Have a great hols.

Mike I take this route as being the old A361 that we used before the relief road was built

Hi Andrew Sorry this is so late, but I haven't been on the forum for some time. You were asking about Ruda. We have been there several times and stayed in their caravans which were brilliant, so when we bought our own van, it seemed the perfect choice. However, we were disappointed with the tourers' park, which is across the road from the main site. We have a 4 x 4 and an awning on our van (as did almost everyone else) but they let far too many vans on the park and did not allow us enough room between each van. The chemical disposal point overflowed most days, which they said they were going to sort out during the winter (this was three years ago). Their charges are quite high, too, so you would expect the full quota of space. Obviously, I don't know what the site is like now, but I would do your reserch before committing yourself. The area itself is absolutely beautiful. Good luck.
