We're all very sad chez Emmerson today. Our beloved Range Rover has been diagnosed as to ill to recover. She's suffering from terminal rust in her nether regions, and the body man has said it would be kind to replace her. She will be put out to grass to rust in peace down on the river bank behind the stable, and stripped of her good bits as it becomes neccesary, to keep her identical successor on the road.

Her successor has already been purchased, and took up residence today. It's a strange coincidence, but we've replaced all of our Range Rovers at five year intervals.

The new one is, once again, a 1994 RR lse, this time in green. If she does as well as her predecessor, I'll be well pleased.

Shame.Totally identical or diesel this time?Maybe a good investment with this one Emmerson would be some Wax oil once a year.

Its another 4.2 litreV8 LSE, seth. I did have a diesel once, but only kept that one for 18 months. Range Rovers were designed around the Buick v8, and to my mind, that's the only way they should be powered!Needless to say, it is already converted to LPG.Oh, and it will be in for waxoyling next week!

I wish money was that tight! Due to the fact that herself uses a wheelchair, we haven't found a vehicle that suits our purpose, as does the RR lse. We cannot put the 'chair in the boot, cos that's where the dogs live, and the chair is too big. Therefore it has to travel, folded, behind the driver's seat, and the extra 8" legroom in this long-wheelbase RR makes it the only car that will do the job. When we run out of LSE's I think we'll probably have to have a van!

Sorry to here of your loss emmerson, I have always fancied a Range Rover but have always been put off because of the running costs. Do you think it costs much more to run a RRover compared to a run of the mill 4x4 or saloon car. I have a Mondeo TDCI but Im not impressed with its towing stability especially on the motorway, not a patch on the Sorento I previously owned. Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers Ian

Difficult question to answer,Ian.I've only ever run old RR, so running costs are minimal as I've always looked after them myself. Now that I'm not so fit, I have to send work out sometimes, and it can get costly, but I use local independent Land Rover specialists. As far as cost per mile is concerned, I run on LPG, so half the fuel costs, and no depreciation, cos when I buy them, they're at rock bottom!

Lets put it this way, last december, my neighbour replaced his 5 year-old japmobile. His cost for the year, not including fuel, had been close on

have you looked at the sedonas they you can get ramps cut out of the bumper and then the wheelchair and the dogs can go in.

I'm sorry to hear that the old campaigner is being put out of her misery Emmerson.

This might however mean that I must be in the running for 'oldest operating towcar on the PCv forum' title with my 18 year old Paj trundle truck.

You must live on a farm because no farm or larger country property is complete without one or two old cars rusting away in odd corners.

Good Luck with the replacement.

Parksy, you'd beaten me anyway! My previous RR was registered 2nd Jan 1994, and the replacement is 3rd Septmber 1993. My Volvo is 1994, so I still have the oldest car in our village,a title I've held for many years now. Modern electronic bore-mobiles hold no interest for me whatsover.

Oh, and no, I don't live on a farm, but do own a bit of land, which doesn't have any old cars on yet, but does have a few trailers and such like. Gives it a bit of character!

I must have saved thousands over the years by never buying new cars and caravans. What I would like to know, however, is where the hell is it????

Forgot to say, Jo-anne(wyoming), yes the Sedona has been severely looked over, and borrowed for a weekend, and it fits the bill in all respects bar two - its diesel, and front wheel drive.Oh, and it doesn't have Land Rover on the front!
