Hi all. Can anyone tell me whether its best to have freesat or freeview if touring in northern Scotland as Im about to buy either depending on your replies. Cheers All

Satellite is dependable wherever you travel in the UK and near Continent but a lot more hassle.

All those places can get signal from Astra 28.2 provided your pitch has a unobstructed view to the satellite.

Many rural locations, particularly in hilly locations can't get a viable terrestrial signal.

I don't have knowledge of TV coverage in Scotland but it will be subject to the same physics and cost restraints of provision of terrestrial transmitters.

So if you want to get TV wherever you go then the route is satellite and the extra the clutter and setting up it brings with it.

Hi

I have a Maplins kit & its OK but the dish is very small & needs perfect alingnment to work. its also light and prone to wind knocking it off the signal.

I've just got a full size sky dish off Freecycle & i use a 4 foot peice of scaffold tube clamped in the jocky wheel clamp to support it. Four feet is enough to get the dish high enough to look over the roof of the caravan if you end up tail on to the signal.

A bit heavy for you weight fanatics but very good.

Hi,

I have a home made Satellite system. I put it together with bits and pieces from home (old tripod based fan became the base, with holes drilled in the feet for pegs to go through. Dishes / decoders are readily available from numerous sources on the internet.

If you intend to tour abroad, you will need a minimum of 50cm dish in order to recieve the Astra signal in France. If you go further south, you will need an even bigger dish. There are loads of websites out there that give very good practical advice. Provided you purchase a signal meter (fairly cheap on ebay etc) and can use a compass to check a heading, you should have no problems achieving a perfect signal everytime.
