Maplin Electronics are selling a "camping satellite system " with a 39cm dish , receiver. sat. finder etc all in a neat attache style hard case for £79.99. Has anyone bought one of these or has any info. or feedback on this kit ?

Yes, I have one and it is identical to the one sold in Lidl during the summer for a bit less.

It is freesat so will not get CH4 or CH5 until their licensing agreements with Sky run out - use the link from their FAQs to Lyngsat.com to see what channels you can get (loads more than freeview).

It is 12v and very easy to set up - even comes with a flat section of cable to get under the van window, there is a sucker base which I did try on the roof, but as the roof flexes and I was worried about damaging it I now clamp it to a seperated windbreak pole and that is fine.

I would suggest you set it up at home first and make sure you have the strongest satellites loaded (Astra 1, 2 and Hotbird) this will make it easier when on site as it will recognise the right satellite when lined up - you can spend hours on the wrong satellite.

If you want a particular satellite pick a channel on that sat and then move the dish until the satfinder gets a signal and you will see if it is the right satellite.

I was so impressed that I now have freesat at home with a motor drive dish in the back room in addition to Sky in the rest of the house.

I got a `Lidl special` as well and it works a treat.

Fiddly to set up at first, but if you get really stuck there is a helpline number and the guy at the other end will e-mail more detailed tuning info.

Nice and compact, and at the end of the day good value for very little outlay.

You get a lot more with freesat than freeview and you will get channels 4 and 5 soon - that it the only drawback. You can choose to recieve your local news i.e. Yorkshire in Cornwall.

You can almost always gaurantee a good signal, even in a deep valley you should be able to "view" the satellite, trees can usually be overcome by moving the dish, high buildings are about the only problem and I have not had one in the way yet.

I have a freeview TV and use the satellite on long stays.

The Hi-di-hi people are now doing "B" grade satellite suitcases for

I am definitely going to get one I have one sitting in my kitchen kindly lent by a friend and they use it in their lorry when they are working in France, we borrowed it to go to Toulouse two weeks ago and the driver we were working with wanted to watch the Liverpool match - only trouble was he got so excited the dish fell off the wingmirror so we called it a night and watched dvd - but he had one on order from Maplins before he left France and it takes literally minutes to set up you can even leave the dish in the box it has fixings.

With the Maplins suitcase setup, which we have, you can also use your Sky box with it, instead of the one supplied if you want Ch4 and 5 and your home package.

The Maplins kit comes with a suction pad which appears to secure the Dish to (say) the roof the car / caravan. However, seeing as teh angle is so critical, any small breeze / gust of wind, is likely to topple the dish??

So how do you recommend I secure the dish so that it's secure?
