Hi....was wondering whether to go for a satellite option for the caravan more so than trying to get a better aerial and wondered if these were recommended and how easy they were to set up.

Thanks in advance for any comments.

Dave.

We bought a "suitcase" kit from Maplin a couple of years ago.

I think it was one of their "B" grade kits and cost around

Hi Dave

Forget aerials. I've been using a satellite system for the last 6 years.

Start by reading David Sullivan's brilliant site :-

www.satelliteforcaravans.co.uk/

I use a Maxview 66cm dish. tripod and quad output LNB.

We take the sky box from home.

I've never bothered with a sat finder. A decent compass guides you to 28.2 deg South East. Watch the screen sat set up. Once you are locked onto 07d4 transport stream and 0002 network ID, just fine tune by very gentle slight movement of the dish.

A dish is not instantaneous in responding to movement like an aerial , so be patient.

Try and set the angle elevation to the right mumber of degs for where you are.

When choosing a pitch I always look at the site plan first and avoid trees that may be in the way of the dish line of site.

Make sure the tripod is well anchored to the ground, sit back and enjoy.

Cheers

Dusty was looking at the the maxiview at Spinney caravans on Wednesday but the 54 centimetre dish 129.99 big difference from Discovery Leisure at 149.99, do you recommend it, it's the best one l have seen for the money, l know Aldi do them occasionally but Maxiview seem to be the company that specializes in Satellite for outdoor leisure.

Will need it when we go to Sandringham in June for 2 weeks has it has very bad tv reception

That is a puzzling statement - '...hate Murdoch.'

Now this may seem a silly question but where do you think Freesat comes from? The only difference between Freesat (BBC/ITV) and Freesat from Sky is the EPG, plus the fact that with a once-off payment of

I bought my system from Aldi a couple of years ago and it works great. I only use the freeview channels though. I only need a compass now and have hit it first time once.

Another unintended plus is that the carry bag/case it all came in is just the right size for cabin baggage on air flights.

Woody, l hates Murdock puzzling, like l hates Gordon Brown or anyone that's unfair.

I was with Sky from the early days had the whole package then l found out that those that were joining later were getting it cheaper, nothing for loyalty, then l rang up to cancel, "why Mr Heathcote", because you are giving it cheaper to new comers, "o/k we will drop yours by ex number of pounds", not good enough l say why didn't you give me the right price in the first place instead of ripping me off.

That's why l hates Murdock, ripped me off for years.

Rant over will stay with free view or free sat, anyone else got the same treatment from Sky.

check your local yellow pages. There will be a shop / outlet selling dishes(get a sky mini dish the mesh type), LNB and tripods , and you should be able to get all that for around

Has any one done a demonstration Video of setting up Satellite systems, l see Maxiview has done on the Caravan Channel, the fixed system on the motorhome is good but the tripod one not quite has good.

I will be setting mine up for the first time at Easter, don't want a divorce in bag which nearly happened the first time we put the Awning up.

DO NOT get a Sky mini-dish. They are designed to only just work in a domestic environment - that is why there is a bigger (Zone 2) dish for Scotland.

Get a conventional 60cm dish and it will work anywhere throughout and in most of France even.

I use a spare Sky box without a card as a bedroom TV connection. The only issue is that you have a limited range of channels available (you can get BBC1,2,ITV , Channel 4 and some of the other non-sky based channels)but you will need to manually connect Channel 5 and drive it through the 'services'/ 'Other Channels' button on the Sky remote.

For what it's worth, I bought a Maplins 'satellite in a suitcase' & used it for the first time in Normandy last week without too many problems.

I fixed it using the supplied U-clamp to the jockey wheel tube.

The only problem I had was with the metal arm & disk effecting the compass, so had to hold the compass above the arm & sight it by eye.

The only way you will be able to watch sky sports is to take the box & card from home, the card will not work with any other box than the one that it is paired with.

If you put push fit 'F' connector on your sat cable in the house & the van, it will take two mins to disconnect & reconnect the cable to the back of the sat box.

If you want to watch sky+ you will have to buy a twin LNB for your portable dish.
