Scotland is a wonderful area, where ever you choose to go. It all depends on whether you wish to be close to the sea/lochs or inland with the mountain ranges. However, don't go there in the mosquito season - late-June, July and August - or you will be eaten alive.
The last time we were up there people were walking around in 'bee keeping-type'headgear!!! They certainly looked very odd, but at least safe from the biters.
Whitby is also great and, being on the coast, doesn't suffer from man-eating mossies and is entirely different from anything you will see in Scotland.
If you get the chance, why not try both areas?

Whitby is a town in England. Scotland is a country. You can go round Whitby in half a day. It will take slightly longer to go round Scotland.
Love Scotland, Hoddom Castle just north of Annan is a nice site. Further afield there's a good site at Connel nr. Oban (remmber to drive via Callander rather than along Loch lomond as the latter route is quite hairy). We also like the site at Blair Atholl, lots to do locally and some great walking.

i do know the difference Bob, there is no way i can see the whole of scotland in a week, its just a toss up between the two as the wife wants to see any part of scotland and i want to see whitby. i don't mean to sound cynical Bob!Whitby is a town in England. First of all, you need to say which part of Scotland you wish to see.As someone has already said.....it is a country,and takes some time to explore.
The West is beautiful,BUT the midge season is from the end of May to the end of August,so choose your times carefully.
The South -West ( Dumfries & Galloway ) is uncommercialised, but again a lovely area to visit.
The North of Scotland has empty roads, which if you come from the busy south are a joy to be on.
You need time to see an area properly,last year we took 3 weeks to do just a small area in the north -west,and this year we are completing the journey,which will be another 3 weeks.

Yes, Whitby is small and you can see it in a day. However, the surrounding area is well worth visiting so I would suggest you stay a little longer. The fish'n'chips at Whitby are second to none. If you walk into the 'old' part of town there is a pub frequented by Goths. Charming people, although at first sight you may feel a bit intimidated. You can also have a pint of Imperial beer (which I have never found in any other part of the country! Yummeeeeee!).
