They can land men on the moon but as long asi can remember you can’t walk into a clean fresh public toilet, especially at the seaside.St Ives is supposed to be Englands Premier Resort but leaves a lot to be desired.Im used to them but god only knows what the foreign visitors must think.
I’m not prudish I an remember the big brass penny locks on toilets with 6 inch of water on the floor, plus the human anatomy drawings on the doors but we should have advanced a bit in 70 years

When was the last time you saw a 'toilet attendant'. I remember them in lots of public toilets when I was a kid, haven't seen one for years.

When in Cornwall in May went to Tintagel where there are always coach loads of foreign visitors. The toilets are turnstile pay on entry, but felt sorry for a wheel chair person who could not use a Toilet as both the Disabled RADAR key Toilets were padlocked up with locks top and bottom of of the doors. No way can a wheel chair user go up a step and through a turnstile. What ever do these foreign visitors think when they leave.

I remember a public toilet in Streatham. London that had glass cistern with goldfish in them, around 1960 s I am not sure if the toilet attendant lived there or not.

Fully agree,
You can buy RADAR keys .
They removed our village public toilets to save money, they said the money saved could be used to pay form traffic wardens, they never happened.

I have seen good bad poor and extremely poor in this country. But then same in France.

We once took a random ferry trip from Hong Kong. We got off at an island about 45 mins away. The island looked poor and unkept. We did not even fancy drinking from a can we bought in a shop. But desperation forced us to use the public loo. It would have done a top hotel justice. We went in on arrival and they were cleaning them. We went in 1 hour later before getting the ferry back. Cleaners still there. From memory they were free, and they also had showers.

St Ives Council’s accounts state
Public Conveniences income £70,202
Costs. £235,581

Best write to the Council and complain 😉

IMO the real problem is the user. You have to ask what’s the state of their own home toilet?

We have been going to Mevagissey round the Harbour every year exept for COVID year since 1977 One toilet block was demolished a few years back and the other toilet block has never changed in all these years, and now a 50p charge to use it. Again anothecpopular place for coachloads of foriegners

Gone are the days when you went to spend a penny. Then they wondered why people are using side alleys etc as public toilets.

The ones in our town Center shopping precinct are free and excellent. The ones in a nearby car park were free but haven’t reopened since Covid.

One of the councils local to us is Tendring, and to their credit they have teams visiting their busy public toilets multiple times per day. They cover Harwich & Dovercourt, Walton on the Naze, Frinton, Clacton and Brightlingsea. We walk in several locations over the months, and they are always pretty clean (even the ones that need a refurb) and have toilet paper.

The area is one of the poorest boroughs but along with the toilets, they have loads of litter bins which are also emptied multiple times per day. Consequently, there isn't much litter around .

Well done to that council

St Ives!……..Premier! 😳

Is that how low the standard is nowadays? If it genuinely is Englands “premier” resort, then we have hit rock bottom, and sunk into the ground. Don’t ask me where this utopia is, but if it is St Ives!……God help us. 🙁

Agree 100%. It is a town that you pass through generally as quickly as possible as nothing special about it unless you like over crowding and paying high prices for parking.. However we did enjoy a nice pasty from a back street bakery, but we were told where to go by friends who lived in Hale.

Well I love St Ives. The secret is, get the train. St Erth park and ride. And you get to see Carbis beach.

(Dartmouth to Paignton is also very very nice mind).

Anyone remember the self cleaning toilets in France?
Pay to go in, as you leave the door shuts and a few seconds later it does it's thorough self cleaning cycle.
A friend learnt the hard way how it works after I graciously held the door open for him so he didn't have to pay😂

Last year I used public toilets in Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, Arizona, Nevada and California, not one did I have to pay for.

Incidentally, I could not estimate how many car parks we used, again, not one did we have to pay to use.

RIP off Britain!

Better is to start in Totnes, open top bus to Paignton, Steam train to Kingswear, ferry to Dartmouth, boat back to Totnes.
Avoids visiting Paignton, you only see the station 🫣
A group of us did a very similar thing last year, makes a nice day out. Did a few pubs in Dartmouth, a bar on the boat, pubs in Totnes……..…The rest is history! 🤪

I say similar because I actually started in Buckfastleigh, steam train to Totnes then onward.

It’s what happens when a group of old, has been, local ex rugby players get together for a jolly! 🍺🍺🍻🍻🍺👍

They had options for music choice too.. There are some variants around in UK but they never caught on as much as in France.
