self-modified mirrors for towing

How about this then?

I tow with a VW Caravelle and the mirrors were just not wide enough to see down the towed caravan when we changed to a slightly wider model.

The mirrors on the VW are held on with three exterior 6mm screws which go through the housing and into the doors. I could not purchase any towing mirrors to suit the VW mirrors, so I had a brainwave. I removed the mirrors and made up extension blocks which extend the offside mirror 40mm and the nearside 25mm.

I now have perfect towing vision and I cannot see how this modification could be illegal in any way as I am using the original mirrors which are fitted to the vehicle.

We too tow with a caravelle T5 and found that 4x4 towing mirrors fit fine. I have also seen on ebay a few times the mirrors from a wide camper van.

I cant be sure, but I seem to recall that there is some legislation that sets limits for the amount a mirror is allowed to extend beyond the width of the road going vehicle or trailer.

Whilst your mirrors with the extension may be legal when towing, they may be illegal for a solo vehicle.

I just remove the blocks and refit the mirrors when we arrive on siteor when we arrive home
