Senator 5 Tyres

I returned home from a trip to Portugal recently and left the caravan on the drive whilst we cleared it out. A day or so later I noticed that one tyre was very low on pressure (almost flat). When I tried to inflate it I realised that the valve had split. On the valve stem there is a chromed sleeve which (I pressume) is for decoration. It appears that this sleeve had worn a hole in the valve stem. I looked at the other tyre and this showed signs of the same thing happening although the tyre was still holding it's pressure. I've had both valves replaced and have removed the chrome sleeves.

My questions are - has anyone else had this problem and do these sleeves serve any purpose other than decoration?

Had a S5 and S6 Indiana with no probs thought they were just for looks.Am looking for some new tyres as mine are over 5 years now so I will get some new valves to be on the safe side
