The current crop of murdering scumbags rejoice at the adverse economic effects of their criminality.
Paris has been targeted and Brussels is in a state of armed siege because of a rumoured atrocity that has yet to take place.
Touring caravan parks tend to be in rural locations, but the spread of terror requires widespread publicity so these atrocities are more likely to take place in large cities.
London, Birmingham, Manchester and a host of other cities both here and abroad are likely targets, but if we all cower indoors too afraid to go shopping, to enjoy concerts and evenings out or to use public transport they have won.
All that we can do is to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activity or abandoned packages or bags wherever we go, but don't allow those who would limit our freedoms the satisfaction of affecting our lives to the point where we are too scared to enjoy those freedoms.

The disruption at Dover is not worth the hassle, whether its the migrants or the port worker disputes, or ferry company crews, had enough of Dover, so now use Dunkirk for short trips, and Santander for longer times in Spain.

If you were planning to go, I hope you still do. Make appropriate plans to minimise the effects of disruption and to maximise safety, but don't let the terrorists win.

In that case where do they sail from to get to Dunkerque? I thought it was Dover.....................?

We are going to Spain driving through France at the end of December and returning the same way on our return. In May we are going to France again, as far as I am concerned I love going to both places and will continue to do so.

We had the brochures but between the strikes at the docks and tunnel, the people at Calais trying to get here and the terrorists not sure now.

To be blunt a holiday is supposed to be a holiday. I had 22 years in the services and went to some pretty 'exciting' places. Can't say that I wish to put my nearest and dearest either in any more risk than necessary or force them to spend any time being worried or 'vigilant' - that's my job. We have avoided Calais/Dover for several years now but the latest atrocities have made me rethink ferry travel. One of the reasons we took up caravanning was because air travel had become so awful. Think we might do a tour of some of the UK that we have not seen for a lot of years.

Keeping my fingers crossed that lots of you don't go because hopefully the ferry prices will come down for the risk takers like me! ;)

I did 28 years and having seen a lot of the less touristy places around the world as well as some of the touristy ones I reckon that there is plenty of our home land to be explored. I wasn't planning on going to France so the actions of terrorists has made no difference to my pans.

.........my plans have not changed.
I will be driving to France crossing Dover / Dunkerque even though I think cross channel ferries are sitting ducks for terrorists.
I have thought this for a number of years so the latest incident has not changed things :(

What service? Was in the RN myself. Like you I have yet to explore lots of the UK. Keep meaning to go back to Scotland but it's always seems so far from Dorset but might do that this year.

I have just completed my plans for our two annual 6 week tours to Europe.

For our Spring tour we will spend the first week driving to Spain down the west of France and then, after spending 24 days in Spain we will drive back through central France taking about 2 weeks doing this.

For our Autum tour we will spend 24 days in NE France and the Loire, including 4 nights in Versailles during which we will visit Paris on at least two days, before moving on the Germany and Berlin.

I do believe we have to carry on with our day to day lives and not give in to these threats, however you have to be careful and more aware in these dangerous times. It is more than likely they will strike in the UK and this could be anywhere, so it could be that France is safer, as they are on high alert against the threat.

I hope everyone that was going still goes, don't want them all clogging up the UK. Has everyone forgotten the number of times the UK has been targeted? It's always a shame when people lose their lives but it's not all about terrorists, Hungerford comes to mind. Do we all stop going on the roads because of others speeding or drink driving? I remember the number of times we were evacuated from our home city centre when I was growing up due to bomb scares just because the IRA were being tried at our local crown court. I should never have gone to school, town, church, or indeed home because of the risks. We lived on the court to prison route and had armed police at the end of our drive when prisoners were being transported. Did any of this stop us about our daily activities? NO. Just go on holiday as planned and enjoy!!

I only did 14 years but that did include 4 tours of NI at the hight of "the troubles". Today I have been told by Mrs Chrisbee that I am taking her shopping in Bluewater. To my mind that is a prime target for terrorists. Sure, I'll probably be a bit more vigilant than usual but I like to play the odds game, the same as when I use the the chunnel. I refuse to let the scum win.

Us too Carper. 27 December overnight ferry. I'm anticipating more security checks (no one has every looked under fixed bed in UK) and possibly checks at French Spanish frontier. We stay away from large towns and cities as much as possible anyway.

Despite numerous trips on the ferries we have never had a serious security check. They did check under car with a mirror on a stick once but that was it.
The security services have however practiced dealing with a high jacked ferry using a Calmac ferry.

I was a waffoo. Came out in 88. My son is now in but coming out soon. I was quite shocked when I visited him in training in Gosport - absolutely nothing like it was; and not in a good way:-(

If there is going to be any trouble from terrorists. I would think it would be more than likely be from Dunkerque and Calais as they have more cover with all those already there waiting to come over.
I still don't think anything will happen. If you worry about it then you leave your house as it could happen anywhere and anytime.
