Is there a correct or prefered way to level the caravan.

Gary, there is no "correct" method for setting up a van, as such.
It is whatever works for you.
Levelling is easier if you get the van level across the axle first, then adjust the jockey wheel to give fore to aft levelling.
Finally, lower the steadies to support the van.
You should never use the steadies to jack the van into level, or any other purpose other than just steadies.
