I read in the Daily Mail today about a caravan site in Brighton being turned into a travellers site, by the council, is this the same site we hope to book next year with the Caravan Club ? In the paper, locals mention about constant trouble from Travellers, I have never seen or heard about this before in any reports. Anyone know anything about this or views on the camp ? Thank you for any advice.

Hi Big Bum

We are also booked into the CC site at Sheepcotte Valley and are somewhat un-nerved by the artlcle in the newspapers - particularly as we have a van the likes of whch the merry travelling fraternity love to borrow.

Having once been to Brighton and driven down the Sheepcote Valley road ( from the race course to the marina ) I remember it having a built-up area on one side and open country on the other so although the CC site is in the valley, I assume the area of infestation is somewhat higher up.

All being well someone with good local knowledge will provide accurate advice - in the meantime, I fed the Post Code of the CC site ( BN2 5TS ) into Google maps and looked at the Satellite view and also entered it into the Ordnance Survey map site at .

http://getamap.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/getamap/frames.htm
and it seems to be a fairly big area. In the absence of further information, I shall have to trust in the good sense and security of the management at the CC site.

Olly.

I doubt very much that it will be Sheepcote Valley site as this is a Caravan Club site, and there has been no details of it being sold. It is quite difficult for access insomuch as it is down a very long narrow lane, almost hidden from the public road, and is constantly staffed by CC staff, and at night gated and locked. I cannot imagine that CC would allow gypsies to camp here.

Hi

Sheepcote Valley refers to a huge area of the Downs near Brighton.

There is a CC site of normal standard, a refuse site and a proposed Local Authority Travellers site.

None of these are near or in sight of each other, you do not need to worry.

Bear in mind that Brighton has high parking charges, with many streets for residents only (they have to buy a permit).

Two places worth a visit that do not figure much in tourist info.

Devil's **** for the view of the Weald with it's Pub and myth.

Shoreham airport, the worlds first, still quite busy with light aircraft movements, museum, cafe and viewing area.

Hi Phil,

These people that are being talked about are travellers there is a difference beetween travellers and gypsies.I think you'll find that travellers are the ones to beware of not gypsies. Most travellers are Irish tinker types not wanted in Ireland who cause the most havoc doing bodged jobs tarmaccing ,roofing etc.and leaving a general mess where ever they go,and do they like a fight god help us.jim

Gafferbill has given the answer to the question posed by the original poster so to save this topic from descending into the usual rant about travellers, gypsies or whatever I think we'd best leave it at that, thank you.

Thank you Gafferbill, as the moderator says, you have provided the overall information I was hoping for and in so doing, have put my mind at rest as to the security aspects of a visit to the Brighton site.

Page 195 in CC handbook describes Cae Mawr Caravan Club Site on Anglesey as follows

".......This part of the world also provides a good stopover for travellers to and from Ireland...."

Umh! Is that another to worry about!!!!!

Just joking!!! please don't bother to explain what they really mean!!!!

I can confirm that the two locations are in the same general area but apart from each other. The CC site is to the bottom of the valley whereas the Traveller site being proposed is further up and there is an open area between them.

If looking at the map link provided by Olivier my understanding is that the proposed Travellers site is above the "104" showing on top of the word "Whitehawk" and close to the left of the "Brighton Kemptown".
