September issue of PC features used Shogun and mentions need to change nylon timing chain guide,has anybody experience of doing this,or having it done at regular service.Looks fairly simple job on You tube,can't believe I have not heard of this before, having had our Shogun for 12 years no dealer has mentioned it.

Thanks Sproket and Parksy, since posting I have looked on Pajero Forum and plenty of advice, seems like a straightforward replacement,have ordered the part and rocker cover gasket from Milners and will get it done next weekend, for the cost of the part I am thinking safety first as there are tales of woe on the Forum. Apparently it is not checked at routine servicing and as I said I had never heard of it until I read it in magazine so thank you PC as well.

Oh yes more than happy with it, Liked the previous Sport model but this is much better, the van weighs in at 1700kg and don't really know it's on the back, just got back from east Sussex and combined solo and towing averaged out at 22.5 miles to the gallon, so nearly double my last one at 12 to 14!!!.
Got a bit of vibration on the exhaust at low revs but put that down to the enormous amount of[strike] craters[/strike]
potholes up there in Sussex, so will get that sorted this week.
Will sort the guide out over the winter period.

I had my exhaust crack probably due to potholes and vibration,garage says it is not unknown,thought I would be in for a new exhaust section, but was able to get it welded .and has been fine since,I thought the East Sussex roads were pretty good, compared with Wiltshire/Gloucestershire, when I was there in March.I find I get some vibration through the front brakes when solo,not as bad when towing,probably just my individual car, leaves a lot of brake dust on the front wheels.Otherwise delighted with it don't understand why there are not more about, especially when you look at what you get for your money v other well known 4x4s that are available

I still have my old Pajero which hasn't given any trouble since that oil leak at Stowford.
I bought a little Peugeot 206 1.4 diesel as a runabout, £30 p.a. road tax, cheap insurance and 70mpg. I'm taking the Paj home from Wheatalot (we don't live too far away) because I have a bit of travelling to do while we're there. I have to go to Cannock from Wheathill on Saturday and Birmingham on the Sunday so I'll collect the Pajero on the way back to tow the caravan home on Monday.

Saw the pothole a couple of days later and think the whole wheel must have gone down it.
Parts arrived today and I have replaced the top timing chain guide,old one had no plastic left and the chain had started to chafe against the metal so I think I have been lucky that PC happened to feature Shogun and mention the possible failure of the guide in this issue,straightforward DIY job, If any body else wants to do it I recommend the Pajero forum that Sproket has attached a link to.

Late to this party - as usual.
I was aware of this problem and mentioned it to the dealer when it was last in for service. I was told that my model did NOT have a plastic guide, so I assume that this has now been changed on later models, though not sure from what plate.
Just had new discs and pads all round as I had a warped disc that was causing a slight wobble at low braking and speed.

Just received a letter from Mitsubishi Motors,
IMPORTANT; TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER SAFETY RECALL.
Vehicle has been identified as one of the vehicles where a higher carbon build up in the engine oil causes the check ball seat of the timing chain tensioner to wear prematurely. The check ball may stick to the seat and the tensioner no longer functions properly. This in turn will result in an un-tensioned timing chain, which causes a rattling noise and will break in worst case
Will take half an hour to change BUT if the timing chain is identified as needing replacement it will be 14.8 hours.
Not a real problem but it,s the inconvenience of it nearest dealer is 16 miles away, oh well best get on the phone!

Seem to recall yours is the same year as ours,but not heard from Mitsubishi yet. Did you buy yours from Mitsubishi dealer? I will be interested to hear how you get on as a previous recall for replacement dipstick on mine was done FOC at Mitsubsihi maindealer.From what you have said I am hoping a noisy timing chain would indicate the problem and at the moment mine is not particularly noisy apart from the usual start up.

Rectification work: It is essential that you contact a Mitsubishi Motors dealer of your choice to make arrangements for the timing chain tensioner, Guides and timing chain to be inspected and replaced if excessive wear or damage is identified. This rectification work will be completed free of charge. Please present this letter to them when the work is carried out.
Seems that they are taking responsibility for all possible scenario's.
Will double check before it is booked in, rang them today and they are to get back to me on Monday to confirm date, they have even offered to collect the car and I also asked for a courtesy car which they are willing to provide "if one is available" !!!

seems this recall was instigated by the Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency (formally VOSA) this is also printed on the top of the letter.
You say your chain is noisy from usual start up, dont seem to have this problem, mind you i dont drive it that often.
Why dont you ring your nearest dealer on monday mate and ask about it, the one I rang took reg No and confirmed it was in the recall procedure.
You may want the letter though as proof they wrote to you. (see paragraph in response to Dusty's post)
Also did you not change the guide yourself?

Hi Kev Thanks for the info,think mine may be OK as by 07 they had made quite a few changes,including putting up a lot of the road tax to £500,but will ring the dealer to check anyway,thanks very much.
I think that having bought from the mitsi dealer you should be covered for the recall costs,if you need the chain as well they should do the whole lot, the part that I changed was the timing chain guide on the top of the engine, which may have been modified by 07,but from your post I think the recall relates to the the tensioner which is lower down in the block and on mine is like a spring loaded pin that pushes against the timing chain, the rattle in mine when cold has been there since I have had the car just sounds a bit like tractor.once it is warmed up the noise goes.
