Shogun Tyre Wear

Could owners of 2001 onwards Shoguns please tell me what mileage they are getting from their front tyres.

Although i have had the alighnment checked 3 times by my dealer the tyre wear is excessive. 15000 miles max.

The tyre wear is on the outside of the nearside tyre and the inside of the offside tyre which to me points to tracking or alighnment. Also when going in a straight line the steering wheel is tilted slightly to the right. Dealer says settings are correct but hasn't a clue what is wrong.

For instance one side of tyre almost bald and the other side has 4 millimetres.

Help please.

Hammer could be a problem with the power steering, fifteen years ago had a Maverick screwed tyres off every 5000 miles on the front, it was found Fords power steering was the cause but wouldnt admit it, went back to the Shogun and have never had a problem.

Hope this new one dosn't either

Chris, Parksy, NGH,

Thank you all for your help. I have been on the web sites and printed off quite a bit of what i think will be of interest to my dealer. One of my printouts covers the power steering.

Car going in to dealer tomorrow 8-30am, "with printouts"!!

Thanks again.

Hammer what year is your Shogun, l have justtraded in my 10 year old 98 model 2.8 GXL for a 07 3.2 equippe, only had it 2 days but really impressed sofar.

Please let me know what the findings were, surley it can only be alignment, wheel balance or Steering issue.

Regards

NGH,Parksy and Chris,

Arrived back from my dealers 2 hours ago.

My Shogun is a 2004 LWB Elegance Auto 3.2DID.

I showed the owner some of the printouts and he was not convinced. However the Senior Technician, his son, read them and decided the only solution was to do a full 4 wheel alignment, camber and tracking check.

He got a Mitsubishi printout of the correct settings before starting.

The camber on both front wheels was out. Both were leaning towards the nearside, the offside one quite a bit more than the nearside one. Both were reset.

The camber on the rear wheels was correct.

He then checked the alignment back to front ,and then front to back with the laser equipment. The front to back was well out. The alignment was reset.

Prior to setting the tracking he noticed that the trackrod on one side was much longer than the other one. So he set them equal before setting the tracking.

He then set the tracking.

At the end he Double Checked all the settings again.

We went out on a road test and i can really notice the difference.

I was present the whole time and could see the settings.

It took with coffee break about 3 hours, and was all done free of charge. Mind you so it should considering all the hassle i have had.

If it hadn't been for the help of Chris, Parksy and NGH on this forum i am sure i would have still been tearing my hair out!!

Thanks again.

Hi,

Mines a SWB 2004, I get the tyres swapped front to back every 10,000 miles.Still on the original Bridgestone Dueller H/T , 35800 miles. Have to admit they are almost on the tyre wear indicators.

Lets hope the next ones will last as long.

Cracking tow car.

Robin.

I'm glad to hear that you sorted the problem out Hamer.

My venerable swb Paj is still a good towcar even though it's 17 years old. The old trundle truck passed the m.o.t. last week and all I had to do was fit new brake pads all round -

Hammer l believe you had the fixed tow bar from Mitsubishi, there are two height fixings for the tow ball, mine is set to the bottom ones which is your tow ball set to.

I will hitch the van up Friday to see how the caravan sits on the bottom holes, there is an height from ground to the centre of the ball which l am not sure of.

NGH,

Just checked on my Shogun. There is only one set of holes.

However my Shogun is on level ground in our garage and the height from ground to centre of towball is 43 and a half centimetres. Just under 17 and a quarter inches.

I have a 2007 Swift Conqueror 655 twin axle and when hitched up the caravan is level and gives a great tow in all conditions.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Hammer will check the Shogun tow ball height from ground to the centre of the ball, if its near 17 1/4" l will leave alone if not l have to go back to the dealer on Friday as they fitted the wrong plug, 7 pin instead of 13 pin l will have them change to the higher setting if required, thanks for the info.

Only had it 5 days its returning better fuel consumption than the last one and this is a 3.2 Auto hope to do better towing as well. Someone on this forum suggested l should bin it has he can get 27mph against my 24mph on country lanes and 1 in 5 hills but l am telling the truth, not so sure about is Disco, my brother when he had one was only doing 23mph in the same locality, would be interesting to know what you achieve.

NGH,

When i am driving around my local Porthmadog area and the country lanes around Snowdonia i get 25/26 mpg. Bear in mind outside the main holiday season 5 cars is a traffic jam round here. Also unless i go into the heart of Snowdonia there are no steep hills just gentle inclines. On a long run, dual carriageway and motorway, at national speed limits i can achieve 29/30 mpg. I use cruise control a lot.

Towing my Swift, 1780 kgs fully laden, on a long run to the Lakes last month, full tank on leaving home and filled up on first trip from site next day---19.5 mpg. I set the cruise on 60mph on dual carriageways and motorways where possible. These roads make up about 125 miles of the 174 miles journey.

Just an aside my wife reckons when she is driving, solo or towing, she can achieve a couple more mpg. She calls it the "feminine right foot". Who am i to argue?!!!

Hammer, also the wife believes she gets more to the gallon than l do, she is district nursing manager that travels in short journeys, she believes the reason why is because this shogun is more responsive on the accelerator than the last one (women's car)

I am going back to Barnsley tomorrow to have the correct towing plug fitted, l will check the milage on the shoguns computer and report back.

This is a run over the pennies so it will give it a good check on what the fuel economy is on country roads with 1 in 5 hills, l still feel that l will only return 24mph.

Don't get me wrong l will be well happy with that, all this b-l sh-t that 4x4's are doing 27 to 29 mph on these sorts of roads is pie in the sky.

I bought this car for the area l live in and its towing capacity, not bothered about the
