Cables should never be loaded into a front locker.
Why? I'm thankful for every extra kilo that I can get up front to achieve the necessary noseweight. I even carry the awning in the front of the caravan, just as ballast, even when I don't plan on using it.

hi all,
has anyone else actually measured the average distance from van EHU to the bollard !!!
the last 5 sites we have been one were in order last first, 3mrts, 5mtrs, 5mtrs, 7mtrs and 9 mtrs, on any of the above sites a 10mtr cable would have been fine,

Hi Whitetop,

In my days as a Traffic cop....hence the username....we did lots of checks of caravans. Never found any that were over their max weight, but found plenty that had been loaded badly cusing exceeded NW or axle weights. A bit of common sense is all that is required.

Nit picking perhaps, but I would be very surprised if a caravan that exceeded its axle limit wasn't over loaded in terms of its MTPLM or MAM! Most caravan manufacturers utilise a chassis that is rated higher than the designed load capacity of the caravan, consequently to exceed an axle load will almost definitely exceed the designed MAM.

A secondly, everyone who falls foul of the weights issue will probably tell you they used 'common sense' which emphasises how fallible 'common sense' is.- Now 'good sense' will always be right.

I carry two cables , one is Black supplied on a reel by Hymer when I bought the Van and a length of white that I have very occasionally used as an extension. However I primarilly carry it for occasional use on sites where the cable has to cross a site road and be driven over, such that if I were to lose a cable it will be the one I got for £5 off Ebay.

I have a long lead and a short lead both on cable reels for easy winding and storage
The 2 can be joined together if needed using the protective box shown below
I carry them in the front locker to get the noseweight up to the reading on the gauge but only carry one Calor light gas bottle

Is your joint connenctor (torpedo) fully waterproof when it rains? If so, where did you buy it please?
I bought 'waterproof' one a couple of years ago from Go Outdoors and when it rained it leaked like a sieve, both along the hinge and along the join. The cable entries weren't much better either. I took it back and explained the situation - it wasn't in their catalogue the following year!!

It appears to be water proof as I have not noticed any water inside the casing and the blue plugs and sockets are made for outdoor use and so just need protecion from direct rain I would have thought
Usually I make any connection under the caravan and off the ground
I bought it from a caravan dealer
Hi again
I just got it from the garage and it has black rubber sealing all round the opening and at each end where the cables go in
Its made to take the blue standard caravan plugs and sockets

£8-99 is a good price for piece of mind when using connected cables outside.

20 years ago we never had that luxury and I had to improvise using a 2 litre ice cream tub with slots for the cables to drop into and a false floor in the box, allowing 2 inches of water capacity before it reached the socket & plug. Together with a tight fitting lid, i never had more than a dribble of water in the box.

I used to carry a 25mtr cable and another one cut down into 10 and 15 mtrs. In those days we stayed at at Pall Mall in Tywyn frequently and pitched on the tent field and fed cables into the static field for power. I even had rubber cable ramps for the track that the cable crossed. Well risky today I guess, but that was the fun of camping on the wild side.

Now as caravan sites have matured, it is very rare to be more than 10 mtrs from the EHU.

It isn't in Europe.

My pic showing the connector box was taken in Brittany at Camping Municipal Malestroit where we were plugged in in the toilet block and needed the 2 cables
We then moved on to the C &CC rally in Sarzeau and the club warn in the sites brochure that an extension lead may be needed as some pitches are a long way from the site hook up box
We have usually needed the 2 cables on our stays there

WhatsonJohnG is correct.
We carry two cables and have one of the litttle joint protectors. It's very common to find that you need a second cable on continental sites. On continental sites you often find that apart from caravans being plugged in to the supply box there are also largish fridge freezers that our european cousins bring with them or hire on site.
