Sites around Caen

We are looking at travelling to France during the summer to visit the World War 2 beaches. We thought a good base to travel around to visit all the sites would be Caen. Has any one got any ideas as to the best sites to stay in and around the area. We are very much into the history and want to see as many of the sites we can.

Many thanks.

This year is an Anniversary year for the D Day landings, and contributors to this forum and others have commented that sites are already full. It's not an area I know well, but have a look here for sites - or if you're going in April/May/June or late August/September check out the ACSI website (www.campingcard.co..uk) or Camping Cheques (www.campingcheque.co.uk) for discounted sites.

Every year is an anniversary year, however this being the 70th is somewhat special and there will be more tourists than usual.
It could well be the last chance for some of the original participants to return to the scene of their historic struggle to gain a foothold in Nazi Europe.
I would like to take this opportunity to say a personal Thank you to all those that took part and especially to those that did not survive.

I am in total agrement Steve w77, we want to go and visit the sites and show our respect to all those who laid down there lives. We only mentioned Caen as it seems central to the area, if anyone has any better places to stay then we are open to all ideas.

Up into the Cherbourg peninsula, look at St Mare Eglise. Not sure of my history but on of the first airbonr invasions was in this area and the church used to hae and may still have a replica of one of the first guys who died with his patachute caught on the chrurch steeple. Close by is a small bet very interesting museum which when we visted insisted on cloing for lunch for 3 hours which emant we could only spend a few minutes before leaving for Cherbourg and the ferry

try this http://www.falaise.fr/tourisme/le-camping we visited all the landing beaches from this site lovely location at the base of Falais castle were William Duke of Normandy was born.
