Sites in Newquay

Hi folks

I am looking for some advice regarding sites in or around Newquay for 2008.

I am just back from two weeks in Paignton, Devon and enjoyed it. Last year I spent two weeks in Dorset and it was great as well but I fancy Newquay for 2008.

I have spoken to a few people who have recommended Hendra site, which I have to say looks really good but I am wheelchair dependent and people have told me that the fully serviced pitches, that I would like to book are at the bottom of a hill. Nobody is able to tell me how steep the hill is and people have also told me that it can flood if you get bad weather.

Can anyone give me more information about this site or can anyone recommend any other sites in that area?

There are three of us, me, wheelchair dependent, my wife and my ten year old son. We are not into loud music but don't mind having something to do on site and ideally would like to have something to occupy my son, after all we do try to accommodate him as much as possible because I believe the holiday is for him as much as it is for us.

I would appreciate any comments regarding sites in this area. I have looked at Newperran but it does not look a patch on Hendra but maybe some of you can tell me different.

Thanks in advance

Dougy

Hi Dougy

Many of the sites around Newquay are on hills, Trevornick is just outside Newquay, next to a 'fun' park, and the site has well laid roads, paths etc.I think it has it's own website so may be worth a look, last time we were there they also had a webcam feature so you could check the weather before you go.

Hi Keith

Thanks for the suggestion. I have asked for a brochure from them. I know a lot of the sites around this area are on hills, but being wheelchair dependent I like to try and see what is about before I go. Although I am wheelchair dependent, I am fit and able to do everything for myself, I just like to know what is ahead of me before booking anything.

Many thanks

Dougy

Hi Jo-Anne

I stayed in WestStar's Sandford Holiday Park in Dorset. To be honest the location was great, close enough to drive to Poole, Weymouth and Bournemouth but the facilities were not that great.

There was one communal shower block for approximately 70 vans and the same amount of tents. Not great. There was only one disabled toilet in the place so I had to get up at 6 every morning to try and get use of the facilities.

We did not go to any of the entertainment or anything so I can't comment on anything like that. Overall it was alright but nothing special.

In Paignton, we stayed in Beverly Park. The park in on top of a hill and it was pretty good. The facilities were good and the site was pretty good. You would need a car there as being on top of a steep hill you need to get back up to it. The location was good because you are only a 5 minute drive from the centre of Paignton, 15 minutes from Torquay and the same for Brixham.

I think I would have to say that I preferred Dorset better than Devon but this is my personal experience. I liked both but I thought Dorset was slightly better.

I just want to try Cornwall now.

Hi Dougy

we stayed at Sea View International this summer, south of St Ives - website: http://www.seaviewinternational.com/

it is a flat site with various facilities, and the showers had a disabled shower/bath room with the sinks and laundry all wheelchair accessable - strangly the only place that had steps were the toilets.

there is a swimming pool, crazy golf, games field, and games room for your son and always plenty of other kids around.

hi dougy, thanks for that i just fancy dorset next year after watching the programme coast. we have been going to cornwall for years in statics and holiday cottages.

we have been since we have bought the tourer aswell. when we went last year we had a look a quiet a few sites and was not inpressed. we only usually use caravan club sites and now i know why.

are you a member of the caravan club?.

if you havent been to any of there sites then usually the facilities are faultless. the pitches are of a good size and your not squashed together. they have disabled facilities and if you have a blue badge when booking tell them thisand ask for a pitch near to the toilet block then they will reserve it for you with a big blue badge stuck in the grass on your pitch.

as i said earlier we went to have a look at the carnon down site when we was down cornwall last year and this site is the best i have seen. its a nice quiet site sort of in the middle of cornwall so you can go anywhere, falmouth, padstow, newquay etc etc. great disabled facilites i did have a quick look as my son is registered disabled.

i wouldnt stay in newquay again it gets far to busy and noisy. thats my choice and some might not agree with me.

cornwall isnt like it used to be its really commercialised now and expensive. people call padstow padstein as rick stein owns most of it.

it is a beautiful place and that will never change but i belive that dorset is just as beautiful and not as expensive and as far to go.

good luck

hi dougy, have a look at the parkdean website. the have a park just outside newquay it takes tourers and it has a few statics and log cabins. it has kids club, pool etc. they have standard and fully serviced pitches it is expensive thought.

i havent been on this site so i cant comment.

have a look on www.ukcampsite.co.uk and you can usually get a review of sites on there.

Hi Jo-Anne

I am a member of the Caravan Club and I use the site throughout the year. I can't fault any Caravan Club site that I have been on and I usually book online and ask if there is a possibility of getting a pitch near the disabled toilet and I have never been let down.

I know exactly what I am getting when I go to the club sites so they are a definite safe bet for me.

It is just when it comes to our summer holidays I like to go somewhere with facilities for my son, like a swimming pool and maybe some other things for him to do.

Thanks for the suggestion about Parkdean holidays. I have been on a couple of their sites and as far as I can see it is a commercial game they play. They just want you to keep spending money when on the site. I don't really mind this if it is good value for money but I have yet to find one. I won't rule it out, I will have a look and see what I thing.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions, it is appreciated.

Cheers

Hi Dougy. I can highly recommend Polmanter at St Ives. Beautiful location, fairly level, and Morvah field has the most lovely toilet/shower facilties for the wheelchair dependant guest.

Dougy,

Took the family to Hendra a couple of years ago in October and stayed on the super pitches. Nice pitch, but yes they are at the bottom of the hill and yes the can get swamped with water in heavy rainfall. However the do drain away quickly.

The hill to go back up to the shops and leisure complex is fairly steep but is only about 150 metres long. The wash block and Elson point are about half way up the hill. Roads are all tarmaced and where in good condition.

There are other unserviced grass pitches that are more or less level with the shops etc, but then the wash block would be then up a steeper albeit shorter hill.

Hope this helps.

Regards

JSD
