We are looking at resuming our summer holiday caravan visits to Europe in 2024, haven't been in caravan since pre-covid, although have resumed our yearly visit to Bilbao via plane & airbnb

We are currently undecided as to whether we will cross into France via Eurotunnel, journey south stopping off to see friends who live close to Limoges and then continue down into Spain, staying close to Bilbao for a couple of days before getting the ferry back to UK
OR
start out by catching the ferry to Bilbao and doing the journey the opposite way round - hope that makes sense.

I am after recommendations for touring caravan sites within reasonable travelling distance of Bilbao. Would prefer Adults only and smaller number of pitches but appreciate this may not be possible. We used to use Select Sites when booking previously but they appear to have disappeared, presumably swallowed up by a larger company ?

If it were us, we would drive down and get the ferry back. Much more relaxing. We did the ferry to Spain and then the drive back. Never again as after the drive we needed another holiday.

Why was that Buckman? We did just that this year and had a really good trip. Be interested in your views.

We came back from Roses via Milau and had two breaks along the way and by the time we got to Caen we were knackered and needed another holiday!

We traveled up to St Malo for the return ferry taking sixteen nights to do it, stopping off in five places on the way. I’m not keen on driving for more then 250 miles in one sitting anymore and that way we get to see more of the country.

The alternative ferry port to Bilbao is Santander. Subject to day/date of preferred sailing you may not have much choice as to which port...and it doesn't matter tbh...
Virgen del Mar site is only a short distance to Santander ferry terminal. Some pitches are tight but it usually has space. Pre booking not required.
The entrance gate is quite narrow so you need to take a wide turn.
Driving through France is a long haul.
HTH.
