We are leaving the port at Caen heading down to the Dordogne around 9.30pm. We want to travel for a few hours before getting our heads down so we cut our travelling time down the next day. We are travelling on the M158 towards Falaise - Argantine picking up the A20 towards Le Mans. Does anyone know of any sites or where we can stay on this route late at night?

Thanks

I can understand your desire to get some miles covered before stopping but consider the time. Realistically, it will be nearer 10.00pm before you clear the port - assuming the ferry was on time, etc. The first part of the journey north to Caen and around the peripherique will be relatively slow before you start to make progress down the N158. To cover any worthwhile mileage it will be between 11pm and midnight before you start to seek your site, which is likely to be off the through route. The chance of a site being open and admitting 'one niters' at that time of night is slim.

There are sites close to the Ouistreham Terminal geared up to accept late arrivals and you may consider these are your best option. The alternative is to find yourself forced to overnight in an Aire. Should you choose to push on with your original plan, find a site in the guides and contact them in advance to confirm they will be open late at night and that they may expect you.
