hi, we are thinking of getting a first caravan and looking for a 5 berth for 2 adults, 3 teenagers and 2 biggish dogs. i think 16ft is a minumum but others have said that is too big and we wont be able to get it up tight lanes to the ort of sites we want to use. the towcar has a turning circle of 38feet anyway so will a bigger van make that worse - i have seen vans advertised that are 20ft plus - do people find them a pain to tow and do you need two people to manaouvre them off the car?

Hi claire, the LEGAL max in Britain is 2.3m wide by 7m in lenghth.which ours is.it is no problem to tow or to turn,in fact we sometimes turn it manualy in the driveway and it is easier than our previous smaller caravan. No problem with caravan site entrances as they take this into account.Good luck.

hi claire the most impotant thing is weight rather than size you can get small vans which are heavy and vicsa versa keeping the 85% recondation in mind that is 85% of the kerbside weight of the car go for the largest plus awning we have 520 4 berth and there is only the two of us manovering is fine if the lane is narrow it won't make it easer with a smaller van because they are all about the same width. enjoy your new hobby you will wonder what you are worring about after towing a few miles all the very best pete

Don't forget that the 7m legal limit does not include the length of the drawbar.

thanks guys - gone for an ABI award sunstar and we love it (apart from the damp but thats another story) its quite heavy but weight doesnt matter as we tow with a big landrover . its around the 16ft mark - not sure exactly but it does what we want. ideallyi would have a double bed at the end where there is a single but apart from that its perfect!
