Skoda Octavia 1.9 diesel

We have a Sterling Europa 460 which we've been towing with a Land Rover Discovery, no problem at all. However, changed car to a Skoda Octavia Estate 1.9l diesel and when reversing with van attached there is a very dubious smell of burning clutch!!

Yes, the brakes are off....Other than this is tows well, what do you think. The car is 110 bhp. We did research the match and it seemed to be ok but plan our first long trip on the continent this winter and don't know whether to change back to a Discovery first. What do you reckon?

Our outfit is a 2004 Octavia 1.9 diesel car/ Ace Jubilee Envoy.

We get the burning clutch smell occasionally when we're reversing. Our storage site is a sloping field with longish grass, and I have to reverse uphill into our spot. The couple of times I've gotten the angle a bit wrong and had to do it twice, the smell is very strong.

It worried the hell out of me when it first happened a couple of years ago, but the general advice seems to be that clutches are pretty tough these days.

I try not to touch he clutch pedal too much while I'm reversing. The car seems to push the van along quite happily at minimum revs without any interference from me. There's certainly no need for high revs and feathering the clutch.

Otherwise the combination works well. We get 36mpg towing, and have the bonus of a car that will happily return 60mpg solo.

Have you had a word with a reliable Skoda dealer regarding this?.I would not change back just for the reason you spoke about as the outfit you have is good especially for solo travelling. We came away from a 04 2.5 x-trail to our Skoda 2.0 dsg and never regretted it.
