Smeary Windscreen

Hi All,

Does anyone know of a good windscreen cleaner ? The windscreen on my Peugeot gets very smeary after a very few minutes of using the wipers.

At first (when I first got the car) I thought it was dirty blades. Having cleaned them thoroughly I was disappointed that it had made virtually no difference so I bought new blades. Still no improvement.

I have tried Rainex which worked for a short time but then smeary again. I have wondered whether it could be the screen wash but I have used two different sorts, again with no improvement. I have even used Flash and a scouring pad. The windscreen on my X-Trail, (using the same screenwash) is crystal clear.

I have also wondered whether anything is used when cars are being valeted prior to sale which, whilst improving the appearance of the paintwork, leaves a film on the screen which is very difficult to remove.

Any ideas, anyone, about a cause but more importantly a cure ?

it sounds like the safty coat on the screen is at its end it must have been cleaned with some thing that it shouldent of been wiped with .If you have changed the blades ,screen wash there is nothing left to change.

yes some screens had a anti glear coat added that didnot last to long due to some strong cleaners the result was a screen that looked like it was coveredi in grease.

I guess the previous posters have it right. However, just in case it's severe traffic film on screen and on wiper blades, try cleaning with a well known brown fizzy drink aka the real thing. Used to use this years ago in my high mileage days and always found it good - contains a small %age of phosphoric or similar acid, I understand - probably the same stuff that spoils the rum.

I had this problem a few years ago, tried everything, in the end I put a brick through it and had a new screen fitted.

I justified it to myself on the grounds of safety, as in the rain it was impossible to see much at all and the chances of an accident was almost a certainty.

I've had this with various cars over the years and I use a 50-50 solution of cold water and metholated spirit. Always been happy with the result.

ps. you can always drink the left over solution :-()
