Solar panel claims

Hello all , I have noticed on a couple of web sites that they claim that their solar panels will run caravan refrigerators. This surely must be a pretty ambitious claim. How would this work. Would the fridge have be switched onto 12 volt (car setting) or would an inverter have to be used so that the fridge could be fed ' mains ' power. If the 12 volt system was used, the power draw would I think be constant, because I don't think any temperature control is used in that mode. Either way, you would need a very impressive panel and battery. I am only interested, and do not intend to attempt it. Thinking back I believe a guy in a motor home told me some years ago, that he ran his (very small ) fridge via solar panels, but I did not use solar panels myself then, and did not really appreciate what he was on about. anyone know the answer?

O

12 volt compressor refrigerators are available but are not normally fitted to UK caravans.
These refrigerators only consume 0.5 to 1.0 amps/ hour..........perhaps the motor home had one fitted.
Perhaps the web sites were referring to this type of refrigerator.
