Whilst I personally don't like them and wouldn't buy one the only complaint I've heard of (and many friends have them) is that they can get noisy as they get older. If you stick to pre 2006 the tax won't make a difference between manual and Auto but then onwards manual will be cheaper to tax than Auto. Know people with manual and tiptronic and not heard any particular complaints about either so if costs not an issue whichever you prefer driving. For me it would be auto every time.

Mine's on 75k in 4 years. Never missed a bit. Not that noisy for a diesel. Great tugger and I think very comfy leather seats.

Have a good look at uksorento.com. That will tell all you want plus you can ask the users too.

Cheers

Just heard of manuals (09) jumping out of gear for no reason

I have an 04 XS auto with 5 speed box. Has been extremely reliable and has low servicing costs comapred to my previous 2000 LRS2 TD5. Not the worlds best ride solo but very smoother when towing. I get 30-32mpg solo and 22-24mpg towing 1400kg. Very good value for money and if you look at the various satisafction indices and reliability surveys the Sorento does really well. Discard stories of major transfer box problems has they did not afect the non-Torque on Demand cars and if you visit the UK Kia Sorento Home pages you will see Kias own Technical investigation report. Even if you were to be affected at some point in the future the solution is now around
