should a child run out just think of the concquences this would cause!!!.what do other readers think!!!!

Hi Dave,

One of the main reasons I'm getting into this Caravanning lark is because I like the idea of my children (5, 3 and new one in Oct) being able to run around safely on a campsite, away from roads and traffic.

The idea of someone stupid enough to speed on a campsite spoils thi sentirely for me. If I think I need to project my children on a a campsite, I'll be blocking the road with my car and letting people go past when I see they're not speeding.

My thoughts are the same, we have a little boy and again one of the reasons for caravanning is for my little boy to burn off that toddler energy by running around, for someone to speeding on a campsite is ridiculous.

But can I say I have stayed at a few large commercial campsites and find it is normally the staff in company vehicles that don't obey the park speed limits.

Hi dave

I agree we have been to woodhall spa site and the worst site i have been on for speeders a few nearly got kicked off but no signs but the members should read the rule book and few weeks ago on the barnard castle site the wardens had the best idea put a cloth doll all dressed up on a little bicycle as you drove in on the main drag and had a sense of humour putting the C&CC water proofs on her when it rained but i agree full stop.

Lets not just stop at cars - what about the idiot out of control kids on their bikes. A bike ridden at 20mph into a child or adult can do some damage. Recently I saw a teenager showing off and doing wheelies in front of some girls and 5 minutes later one of the girls came back pushing his bike whilst his parents ran to wherever he was. He came back with his parents crying and holding his ear :O(

I do agree, however, I know which one I would prefer to be hit by at 20 mph. I would take my chances with the bike.

Totally agree about the speeding. Witnessed this myself last week on the Penwhos site in Anglesey. The site was pretty full come Friday afternoon and Mr Frontera towing his Bailey turns up late afternoon to find a limited choice of pitches.

Finding one to his liking, he deposits his wife onto the pitch to claim it and hurtles back round the circuit at about 30 mph to park the van up. Any child running from between the vans would not have stood a chance.

Lucky for him that my 18 month old was safely inside the van.

Where are they speeding to beats me.

Its like the lemmings who race to be first to the red light or first to wait for the ferry that isn't sailing for 2hours.

Its higher BHP than IQ syndrome.

Or shoe size bigger than IQ--the one on the accelerator

Last week we had the proud grandad with 3 year old on knee while driving round the site.

The prospect of the doter and the speeder meeting ---not a pretty sight/site.

I'm more than happy to abide by site speed limits and wish others were as well.

As my kids grew up over the years on sites we saw some drivers that scared us into keeping a close eye on any youngster on its own near a site road.

I do object tho to the pedestrians who amble down the centres of the roads determined that their 2-3 MPH stroll is the pace the whole site should abide by.

I do hate people speeding on site and always try my best to drive as slow as I can but, I also hate people who let their young children free to play everywhere and then shout at me when their unsupervised child runs out in front of my car.

If children are too young not to understand the dangers of playing in the road then in MVHO they are too young to be playing unsupervised.

Would we let children play where there is heavy machinery working? No, then why do you let children play where there are 3.5 tonnes of car and caravan driving around?

Cheers

Speeding on any site is unacceptable .I complained to about their train speedin on site and never even got a reply
Aint that the truth. On a visit this summer we also witnessed the same thing and the wardens are no slouch either on their quads. One vanner on not being able to reverse his van onto the pitch, drove round the toilet block at about 30 and then drove forwards onto the pitch almost into a bush. Dont these people realise that they are on holiday?

Hi,

I agree that ALL road users should obey the speed limit, be it a campsite or a highway.

I would of thought it an ideal opportunity to teach your children the rules of the road and the Highway Code in a controlled environment. If you let your children run out into the road, cycle on the pavement, ignore stop and give way signs or one way systems. How do the distinguish, between a camp site or the road. Today's children are tomorrow's motorists, the same ones that you are complaining of speeding!

I thought that I was the only one who seemed to notice a widespread disregard of speed limits. 5 mph is a fast walking pace, yet I would find it hard to keep up with the majority of vehicles when they are moving. And in my experience the wardens for both Clubs tend to disregard the speed limit when out on their quads and mowers. I would hate to see additional speed bumps installed so perhaps an educational blitz in the Clubs' magazines combined with a name and shame video on their website. Speeder of the month, with identification plates blanked out.

I know everyone out there gives consideration to everyone else on site and that kids are beautiful little darlings and they don't ride their bikes or try to kill themselves on skateboards, but why do they always want to get past me on site, now my mobility scooter is very capable of giving a good turn of speed if I want it to,

Yes, the little darlings riding about on bikes, wobbling about, and sometimes, (twice on my van ) run into them and cause a small dent, oh thats nothing, but when the little darlings surprise my sleeping dog on its short lead, who then barks, and the owner of the little darling 12 caravans away gets upset, . Getting to old, and grumpy maybe. Adult only and dog friendly sites. I should be going to. Also fed up of CMHC folk saying you shouldn't hang out clothes to dry
BA humbug.

Did you also notice that the resurrected thread is nearly 11years old

Evidently the problem has not been addressed.

Sure I've recounted my first episode of what can only be associated with the roolz of the CC / CAMC /wotever it's called:
I arrived at Bladon Chains one May late Bank holiday Friday just before the witching hour to find 2 units waiting in the lane outside the site. 1 ahead of me, 1 behind at the start of the lane. As the witching hour approached a unit came racing down the lane, past the 3 waiting units, tight fast turn into the entrance and the right hand of the checking in lanes. I awaited the unit ahead to go first, then waved the unit behind in as they were ahead of me in terms of arriving at site. As I pulled into the checking in lane the couple of queue jumpers ran back to their car, the old guy driving set off as the female was trying to close the passenger door, off over the speed hump crashing the suspension to race to an empty pitch.

So as the roolz haven't changed in all these years, I can only guess the behaviours of speeding and racing are a sub set of the roolz.

In my tow cars this far with the caravan, 3 in total, all diesel automatics put it in drive at tick over they maintain 4-5mph. Quite easy to just steer. Why race, you are on holiday not a timetable :p :p

You'd have thought after 10 years, things would have improved. I was on a site, where the wardens were very strict on speeders. When asked why.....because one of the little darlings had been cycling the wrong way at speed and crashed into a car.

And people wonder why their children are abducted, and then complain, when I ask if when a child is being dragged away " is this your child" A few times I have been given abuse, But only once been thanked for my intervention.

And what relevance has abduction got to do with speeding on caravan club sites?
How many children have been abducted from caravan club sites?

Well if you consider about 50 abductions by strangers occur pr annum out of 10 million kids the risk is low in normal, so I would image the risk of being abducted on a campsite is almost zero.

I'm going to fan the flames a bit now

I would make a bet that those selfish people who are prepared to ignore the speed limits on sites are also those who are more than happy to ignore the speed limits on our roads, who are happy to exceed weight margins, and nose loads becasue the law does not apply to them. Any speeders care to comment?

I think without a doubt you are probably very accurate in that statement. Luckily behaviour on CL's and CS's seems to be somewhat more civilised because even with our three in tow we've never once encountered speeding, biking, ball or even worse kite flying issues. On club sites we have. Perhaps the difference is owner of site versus groundsman and cleaner running the site.
