Is there such a thing?

I've noticed on the home page of the website under This month's Big Caravan test it says ".... 2 births" You would imagine that a publication about caravans would know it's "2 berths" lol.

I'm a bit of a stickler about spelling and grammar and must admit I can be a bit picky when it comes to it. I thought that was quite amusing though.

My pet annoyances are when people write "they should of..." instead "they should have....", "there" instead of "their (or vice versa)and "I done ....." instead of "I did ....."

I agree and if I'm not sure of a spelling I will look it up before I post. I think that maybe so many people now say should of and would of instead of should have, would have etc. because of the shortened way of saying it ie should've which sounds more like should of. Makes me cringe though.

Sorry, I can't resist it - "apostrophe abuse", should be children's school not childrens school.
Sorry I think not....I am under the impression that an apostrophe indicates a missing letter, not so in this case

Kevin,

The point raised was regarding the home page of the magazine forum not this or any other forums we contribute to.

Depends on your internet browser. I use Firefox as opposed to Internet explorer. (Much more stable and no irritating habits!) You get a spell checker with it in any language you want. Web address is www.firefox.com, download browser, (quite easy) and you will get a choice of dictionaries. What happens then is as you type any spelling errors are underlined. Right click the mouse to get the correct word. This won't report misused words though like there for their. But does it matter- this site is to be enjoyed and for us to share information so as long as we can understand and people are genuine there is no problem. For guys who want to improve their spelling look at a word that confuses you when you know it is correct and try to find a rule, e.g their applies to people as in this message, there is an i in it like "his" which is also to do with people.

I get really annoyed with those people who, when speaking on TV, say "fink" instead of thing. Or "fort" instead of thought

Has speaking correctly so that everyone in the nation can understand what is being said a thing (fink) of the past?

I had a friend who was a telephonist, and one day when working on Directory Enquiries she was asked to find a number in "Fort Neath". She had not heard of it but thought it might be a small town in Scotland. After much searching she went back to the caller for further clarification and then realised it was Thornton Heath he wanted.

Or a letter for an address in 'Arrijaba'. Turned out to be for Harwich Harbour.

A London born site owner once recommended a pub in Cheddar named the "Bar Farms" for the fantastic food. After searching most of the afternoon, I eventually found the hostelry in question - the Bath Arms of course!

A friend of mine says that they pulled up outside an Indian take away the Black Country where the driver stayed in the car while the other two went inside and ordered three curries to take out.

The Indian proprietor had a cross between an Indian accent and a strong Black Country accent and he kept saying 'fetch your mate' to them.

They kept replying that their mate wanted the same as them and was staying with the car.

The Black Country Indian became more and more insistent saying 'No- fetch your mate!!' and they were saying ' He just wants a curry the same as us!!'

In the end it turned out that the Indian curry shop owner was asking them what curry they wanted, veg or meat.

Reminds one of the Two Ronnies sketch regarding 'fork handles'

However, with no disrespect to anyone, the use of grammar is very important and should never be underestimated. Insertion of grammar correctly can change the understanding of a piece of prose completely, and remember wars often started with misunderstandings. Spelling is possibly less important, especially as many computers use US English as a default, and so will give incorrect spelling advice, if you are British that is. However, if we do not try to maintain some standard then language will deteriorate to a stream of grunts and whistles, ok, many kids are already at that point, but most of them learn in later life the advantages of speaking and writing correctly.

Every one of us at some stage in life will face a requirement to write some form of letter or even an expense report. Getting it wrong could be very distressfull, so to my mind anyone who states writing correctly does not matter, is deluding themselves. There are plenty of Course available to adults, so justify to yourself the reason why humans are considered superior to animals, if nothing else. I also believe Darwin included the ability to use cutlery as part of his hypothesis on humanity's superiority. However, looking in a Macdonald's or any other fast food outlet these days and maybe even that one is getting thin.

As for computers, mine is currently a laptop with a German keyboard, so typing can be fun. I can change the language but not the key lettering. Symbols are in different places from 'QWERTY', but read what you have written and try to correct before submitting it. However, we all have 'fingers and thumbs' days.
