I was astounded when driving up the A1 this week when I was overtaken by an outfit on the A1.

I was solo, doing 70mph, and the white Audi A4 2.0 diesel saloon 2010 reg with colour coding and privacy glass, towing Avondale Leda Malvern, came past doing about 10mph more than me. He maintained this speed all the way from the M18 up to the A638. He had plenty of power which enabled him to stay in the outside lane throughout, oh and he was holding a mobile phone to his ear too. Each time he passed a lorry the caravan gave a good kick which came close to forcing him into the lorry and / or the central reservation.

He was fairly young - guessing mid 30's.

I wonder what made him think that this was either safe, or sensible.

Maybe it was you???

Hi Tug, I have to say in 25 years lorry driving and 11 years caravanning that I've only very rarely seen vehicles towing tourers in the outside lanes of motorways diregarding the speed limit and other traffic laws in this way and those that I have seen haven't to my mind looked much like ordinary leisure touring caravanners.

In these days of surveillance cameras a person would either have to be a certifiable lunatic to drive in this manner or more than likely to have a complete contempt for the law, the police and absolutely no fear of any possible legal consequences not to mention the consequences of a collision.
In the highly unlikely event of this nutter being a forum user nothing that either you, I or anybody else could write here would make one iota of difference to their behaviour.

I don't think it's the driver's fault in these cases! There seems to be a fundamental flaw in the design and build of Audi's and BMW's in that the accelerator pedal only has "on" and "off", with no adjustment in between. I've just had this confirmed by a BMW driving work colleague, and he also informed me that his car doesn't have indicators because they were a very high cost option.
I hope that answers your question.

Thats nothing, on my travels a couple of years ago, i was overtaken in lane 3 by a BMW M3 pulling a small 2 berth - my speedo (right or wrong) was showing 3 figures.

Mind you, about 20 miles further down the motorway it was pulled up on the hard shoulder and surrounded by a number of police cars - my guess being that the van was stolen.

If you wondered how stable an outfit looks at 100mph+, the caravan wheels spent more time off the ground then they did on - think of a heavy airplane trying to take off!

It depends what day of the week it is or what mood I'm in!
If I do the school run, then the choice is obvious. It's either my Range Rover Sport or the Volvo XC90 (wearing my wig and hair extensions, together with a little makeup of course!). If I go out for a ride on a nice Sunday, then it's my Nissan Micra. If I'm drug dealing, it's either the stretched Hummer or my 1985 Mercedes S-Class with lovely chrome wheelarches (ah, the more bling the better!)
However, the pride of my fleet, and when I want a real driver's car, it's got to be the 1956 Morris Minor.
Oh I forgot. If I drop my dummy then it's a choice of the 3-Series or the A4.
Go on, smile!
For those who don't understand, this is called "avin' a larf!"
Seriously though, there is absolutely no excuse for driving as described in either of the posts, no matter what the tow car. Sadly, idiots like that give the rest of us a bad name.

Little basher,

Assuming you were on a UK public highway, then with 3 figures on the clock you were definitely in the wrong and deserve a driving ban. And the caravanner needs to be taken of the roads permanently.

There is no justification for members of the public to speed.

Hi Dusty,
Wouldn't the speedo in kph read faster? I thought the blah!! blah!! blah!! was the noise of the engine - on off on off on off.
Perhaps the speedo's are calibtrated in Mach figures.
You'll get us into trouble you know.
Nigel.

Prof, you assume incorrectly! and as such certainly don't deserve a ban (or an earbashing)

Still, this thread was discussing Caravans being pulled at excessive speed - not my driving habits

But if your speedo was showing 3 figures.... you were speeding....

On the other hand i do drive a bmw 320d( at work ) , and i must say that it is my right and my duty to drive at whatever speed i like in lane 3 .. and stay there...Tis about time that Lane 3 has restricted use for Bavarian built cars enshrined in law. I think i shall compose a stongly worded letter to my MP. If he can spend £80 on a box of paper then he can start lobbying for lane 3 bavarian use only.( But only if its black, other colours ( silver and white) can only use lane 2 along with Scandanavian built vehicles.

I will suggest this to him and i will include that Scandanavian vehicles should have lane 2 reserved for them.

Does any one know if the PM,s petition web site is still open, i think i will start one if it is.

Ah, but i was en route to Munich....Travelling (legally)..In fact, i was one of the slowest cars on the road, by some considerable margin!

I definitely slowed down when that outfit passed me!

Some people don't learn though, i was once overtaken by a van in lane 3 pulling one of those road rollers on a single wheeled trailer. It was snaking so badly i have no idea how it didn't end up in the other carriageway.

Hi all is it just me or is this turning into a BMW/AUDI bashing site? i drive a BMW 5 Series and tow a Bailey Senator, i have been passed many times when solo by people towing with Fords/Vauxhalls/VW's so whats the difference an idiot driver is an idiot regardless of what car they happen to drive. I stick to the speed limits both with and without my van on so i would appriciate not being tarred with the same brush just because i have a nice car.

I'm on an overseas assignment in China at the moment together with two other engineers from the car industry, one an ex-BMW man, the other an ex-Audi. Actually I'm getting along with them quite well. I haven't felt the need to bash them (although I can't say the same for our Chinese business partner). But then it maybe that it's a case of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend".

Some of these comments are so infantile and silly that they do not deserve a place on these forums.Having " a larf" is fine but silliness is not " a larf ".Why not try the Beano?
Cars do not drive themselves wrecklessly, whatever make or model they should be.
Some people think it clever to blame drivers of certain marques.Jealousy maybe or just ignorance.

i have 2 cars, a kia sportage and a bmw 320d estate.

i enjoy driving the kia and towing with it, but i also enjoy driving the beemer, especially as i get lane 3 all to my self. Its black,.... well it had to be , and its on an 09 plate, and my company pays for the fuel, and yes, there is often a suit jacket on a hanger in the back.

im not insulted at all.
