I'm sure it's been asked before but would someone suggest the critical items one should buy as a starter pack for your first caravan? I'm probably going to buy privately and might therefore miss the advice of a good dealer.

Clyde If you go to a good dealer as a first time buyer if he is a good dealer the starter pack should be all you need to get you off on your holidays . I can only vouch for the deal we did as first buyers .

GHood Luck .Sir Roger

Electric hook up lead, the length? (lets not go there again) Your best bet will be a 25 metre length because to much is better than not enough.

Hi Clyde,

If I can add a bit to Sir Rog's list:

- Mains lead (25m)

- Waste pipe (to go from waste water outlet into carrier)

- 'Y' piece (as you'll probably have 2 waste water outlets)

- Gas bottle spanner (we learn from our mistakes)

- Levelling ramp and chock (for those uneven moments)

- Corner steady winding thing (for lowering your legs)

- Spirit level (to help level the 'van)

I think that's a fairly thorough list now.

Opinions are divided on the stabiliser - it will be a couple of hundred quid and people have towed for years and years perfectly well without one. Having said that, we had one fitted before we picked up our first 'van back in February!
