Hi we are travelling from Germany to Normandy for our Easter hols with the caravan. On the way there we need to stop at Calais for at least 2 nights as we are planning a day trip to UK. Any tips on where to stay or avoid would be appreciated. Also i have been on the Eurotunnel website and have been quoted 60 euros return trip which i thought was great. Does anybody know if the prices are the same if you just tip and pay on the day up or am i best booking now? Thank you.

I am happy to suggest either Chateau de Gandspette at Eperlecque(St Omer) of La Bein Assise at Guines. Gandspette is nearer to the direction you will be coming from but Bien Assise is nearer Calais. Pictures of both here Caravantravels

Would recommend Chateau du Gandspette at Eperleques which is part of the Camping Cheque network, so you can save a considerable amount by buying some Camping Cheques. These cost 14 euros each - not sure of the German contact address (each country has its own agent acting for the CC network) but campingcheque.co.uk should give you some information. Each cheque pays the pitch fee for car, caravan, two people, awning and electricity, for one night. The site is open over Easter - and I can recommend it from lots of previous stays. It's about 30 minutes from the Eurotunnel terminal and is within easy access of the motorway (you'll need a credit card to access the junction nearest to Eperleques but it's only a couple of euros for the toll). If you're asking about booking Eurotunnel - then I would definitely book it at the price you've been quoted.

Dawn,

I also would recommend La Bien Assise. At that time, it is excellent value at 14 Euros if using an ACSI card, or a bit more (I believe) with a Les Castels Privilege card. Les Castels sites seem to be a good bet when touring in the low season, since their facilities appear to open earlier than some others.

We used the Speeedferries Boulogne to Dover service for a day return a couple of years ago to bring my grandson back to the UK, which we may repeat this year. This was good value and worked well for us on that occasion. My only reservations about this service are that vehicles are rather 'crammed in,' and it may suffer more than the traditional ferries in adverse weather conditions.

Enjoy your holidays.
