I am pleased to see that you new Defender has arrived. Last Friday I discussed a possible purchase of a 61 reg (Puma) 110 XS SW with a southern LR dealer and the person I spoke to said he wasn't too sure about the car I was interested in and he'd get someone to ring me back. That was Friday morning and thus far it's been a deafening silence. Reading about your travails with the LR dealer and recalling why I sold my Disco 2 for a Kia it seems that LR dealers are not too customer orientated. Perhaps if I'd enquired about one of the 'bling' models I may have aroused more interest.

On the whole the dealer wasn't as much of a problem as LR themselves BUT yes I think many dealers are much more interested in the Bling machines!!! Hull certainly weren't interested in even speaking to us with the old Rexton parked outside. My Disco 2 went because of the unreliability issues more than issues with the Southampton dealer.

As an aside the new engine is much quieter than the Puma we test drove and the gearing seems a little better too!! So far so good with the first couple of hundred miles and enjoying every trip out in her!

Good luck with your dealer, but I have to say there are a few late Pumas out there and I may consider going further afield to buy if I was looking!!

Comgratulations Martin, on a slightly different note can you tell me what you thought of the Rexton? I'm kinda half heartedly thinking of one next

I suppose the first thing to say was I never went out to find a Rexton but at the time three years ago it was about all I could find that fitted the budget and to do the job.

Negatives out of the way first, lots of minor electrical grumbles by the time she went, clock had packed up, the memory setting for the electric seats had stopped working, something was leaking from somewhere underneath and making a mess on the drive, boot catch was playing up, boot light worked sometimes. Previous work done over three years (bought at two and half years old) was a worn CV boot and a cable that hed worked loose from the accelerator.

The positives were that she towed well, performed perfectly well solo, was quite comfortable and refined. tax was cheap because of age, economy was no worse than anything else in it's class, insurance was a bit pricy (nice refund on getting the defender) Did all that was asked of her when it was asked, general reliability was good as far as mechanics went. At the end of the day the old merc technology that the rexton is based on is pretty solid stuff and in some ways better than the more modern merc technology in my opinion.

Generally speaking a perfectly good all rounder. Would I have another one?? For the price yes, but the depreciation is very scary so would not have a new one!!! Not sure when it is going to be replaced, I note there is a new Kyron so may be a new Rexton on its way too, certainly about time. The 7 seater was getting hard to get hold of last year when someone was looking for one. Dealers of course are a bit thin on the ground and I've noticed you don't see many on the road unless a dealer is close at hand. If there is a dealer near by you see quite a few about. The 5 year warranty is good of course as well and transferable.

Hope that helps! Good luck with the search, it took us about a year to decide what to get, but we're pretty sure we've got it right for our lifestyle.

Thanks Martin, I'm not 100% sure on the 2.7 engine being suitable for the 21k miles a year that I drive, but the Rexton does offer alot for little money, looking around the £8.5k £9.5k mark, other than that Sorento, I love the new Santa fe's but I've heard some horror stories about flywheels on them, but then I could always have an Auto?? Thanks for the info
Regards
Mike

Most modern diesels with manual transmission have dual mass flywheels (DMF) - across the board they can be troublesome, particularly under towing conditions, regardless of brand.

Looking good, nice pair we have now!!! Glad my tax isn't that much!!! Did consider saying we'd collect after 1st of feb for tax but decided the wait had been long enough!!

Exactly my thoughts about waiting but at my age youd think I'd be a bit more patient lol.The manual was a lot less on road tax but as I have a knee problem and a blue badge,I'd rather have the auto and be broke but happy.

With you on that Dave, first time I've had a manual for years!!! Swimbo prefers them though and as she does more of the driving than me................................................. I can get lost from town to home and have done many times (about a mile!!!) and get confused as to which gear I'm in, so I only do school run unsupervised so what she wants is what she gets, and of course no option on the defender anyway!! Having said that it's a bit like an auto in town, put it in 3rd or 4th and leave it there.
