Stupid question

I know this is really a stupid question but maybe someone can give me an answer. Why do all roadmaps of the UK start in the south and work their way up north? Atlases and roadmaps of all other countries that I'm aware of start in the north. Has it got something to do with driving on the right or is it just a cunning plot to show the Scots where they belong?

Just for you that there are two reasons one that we look at North as being up ( so the top of the page will get closer to the scots )Industry Standard and two that the OS Map system grid starts from offshore south of Cornwall (Working East and Up).

Had the chance to look at a map in Australia when they decided to have thm on top and the rest of the world below them... interesting trying to find out where places was...

Maureen,

Could we establish a method of identification so that people don't get confused when we are both on line.

I'm the one living in Scotland.......any ideas ???

Lutz,

the reason all UK road maps start in the south and work north is obvious - they are leaving the best 'til last...!

Kindest regards

There's two of you?

Good question, well presented, Lutz. Unfortunatly we don't know what happens when the guy that gives answers starts asking them, so you'll have to delegate someone to ask for you.

That should give us time to run and hide.....

Is it something to do with grid references and the way they are numbered?

It's obvious isn't it, the south is better than the north, thus presenting a better image to tourists. (Ex southerner).

Lisa Simley thingy.

This could get nasty.

How about a compomise.

Start in the East and work West, that way you can't upset anyone that counts.

Lisa,

For your remark, you are grounded for 2 weeks and your computer thingy to be switched off!!!!!

As an ex English girl now living in Scotland with my Scottish Passport. Where the air is clean and the roads are empty and the scenery breathtaking........ need I say more 😱) 😱)

and I can do smiley thingys 😱) 😱)

To stop all arguments I have ask for the problem to be put on the Statute Book in the Upper House for debate. I proposed we should start from the west and work east, just like reading a book from left to right. To those who don't like my proposal ..............................

Sorry Maureen - after I made that posting, I thought about Scotland. I've never been myself but my mum goes regularly and absolutely loves it. Plus I have to say from photo's I've seen it does look breathtaking.

My humble apologies.

I'm So-o-o-o-o shocked and stunned that I am going to have to have a lie down.It might be tomorrow before I re-cover. 😱(

Lisa,

Apology accepted, now go and tidy your room and then maybe you can get your computer back 😱)

Why don't you make a point of having a trip to Scotland?

Can't guarantee good weather.......or no midges....but I love it up here.

Well done Maureen for sticking up for our much-maligned race!

not that we always deserve it mind you. I'm glad to hear that you enjoy it so much up here, my partner and her kids are English - been up here 2 years, the kids love it but poor Karen is still adjusting.

Mark,

I've been here since the 1960's so have had plenty of time to adjust.I hope Karen likes it.....mind you Glasgow is friendlier than Edinburgh.......what a can of worms to open. 😱)

Maureen,

can, open, worms everywhere.....!

thankfully I live in Fife, so EVERYONE thinks we're weird!

I've worked in both Glasgow and Edinburgh in my time, but my dad's from Glasgow so I suppose I should stick up for them.

I think the next forum rally should be in Scotland somewhere, show these people what they're missing.

kind regards
