I have just seen in Autocar a review of the new diesel powered Suburu Legacy estate. The engine is due to be rolled out into the new Forrestor and Impreza.

Anyone think it would make a good towcar - would welcome thoughts form anybody.

The review was very positive and may be a choice of towcar in the future.

Subaru Legacy and Outback have been excellent towcars for a long time but up to now have had two weaknesses - the petrol engines are heavy on fuel and they're very light (and strong) for their size. They also have a reputation for going on for ever as long as fluids are changed at the correct intervals.

The new diesel engine will increase demand for Subarus immensely.

Recently I was going to buy a new Volvo XC70 D5 but realised I could get a petrol Outback for half the price -

Hello,

Our contributing editor and towcar guy David Motton has driven the new diesel Subarus and will be giving the full story in an upcoming issue of the magazine. He says the engines are really strong, but you've said, all models are pretty lightweight which counts against them. We're looking forward to getting a van behind it soon for a tow test.

Cheers

The 150bhp diesel is just the start for Subaru, a 200bhp diesel is planned for the Impreza WRX and the engineers in Japan are already looking at a 3.0 H6 diesel, which would be another world's first.

Hi,

my daughter hada W-reg Legacy and it was a really fine car. Howver Subaru's drive to wring out the best mpg figures has led to the Legacy and Outback being quite lightweight. The new diesel engine seems to be right on the ball but do we really needa 3.0H6 and higher powered variants if the car is not really heavy enough to take a decent size van of 1400-1500kg. Perhaps a diesel Legacy and Alko automatic stability control system might be the answer!

Nice to see Nigel contributing to the forum. I look forward to David Motton's report and the tow test in the future.
