Hi All,

We are looking at getting a Sunncamp Ultima porch awning to use for weekends and short holidays, just somewhere to put a table+chairs, coats etc.

Are these awnings good? I wouldn't leave it up in strong winds but it would have to be waterproof?

How easy are they to put up?

Thanks

Ian

Don't make the same mistake as us. Physically measure the height of your caravan first to make sure that the awning will fit it height wise.

I had the earlier version, the Basecamp. It did the job for four years and then started to mark the side of the caravan. In the end it imploded as the very thin poles split longitudinally.

I threw it away, mainly because of the damage it caused. However for the

Thank you both. On our old Swift the door was at the front and the roof was sloping forwards so we could never have a porch as the front would sag. We now have a new Ace and the measurements fit between the suggested ones by Sunncamp.

I don't expect it to stay up in strong winds, I would hate to do damage to the van. We have a bradcot full and in winds with that the thing has shaken the van around and poles started bending.

It is just to be used for weekends for somewhere to eat and hang coats.

My main concern is whether they are waterproof. The poles seem similar to those in beach tents which flex easily.

That's just it , they flex easily and split.

It damaged my new Wyoming last spring. How do you account for wind blowing up when you are asleep?

My main Izzy and Dorema have IXL poles so no problem.

I got the Dorema porch awning off "Preloved" from a fellow caravanner, cheaper than you will pay for the suncamp. Maight be worth considering a top marque second hand job??

Cheers

Hi Alan,

We currently have an NR Coniston Lux, but it is on its last legs, it is 8 years old.

I'm looking for an awning that is bigger than it, thats why I was looking at the ultima.

I also like the isabella magnum/bradcot portico xl/dorema vitesse. But they are about the same price as a full awning!

They also don't come up second hand very often(I havent seen one in Wales since I have been looking, 3 months)

Yes the wind could pick up in the night. We are going to Trewethett cc site for 3 weeks in the summer.

It would have to have a certain amount of strength so that it would hold up.

I got my Dorema Toronto , hardly used , on "Preloved" and from Wales!! About the same as the Basecamp price wise.

Now you are worrying me.

Trewethett Farm suffers from notorious , sudden , high winds, especially at nights. It is the only site where I have twice been asked by the wardens to take down the awning because of the weather warnings. It was here that my F in L lost his Basecamp. Mine lasted a few months more.

Look , they do work, are reasonably water proof but the slightest wind and I'd be worried. It was the scuffing damage it caused that annoyed me. My Wyoming now has a shiny section of aluminium carefully rubbed away by the Basecamp. Not worth respraying for obvious reasons.

Watch the door height too. Depending where you are pitched if the door is high the Basecamp easily fouled the top of the door!.

As I say for
